These days whenever a politician repeats a promise over and over again commentators say that this promise has become a “mantra” for that politician. For the journalists, the word “mantra” means a meaningless phrase that is repeated endlessly. For yogis however, a mantra is a word or collection of words, which has the power of liberating a human being from all limitations.

How can the repetition of a word or a few words have the capacity to bring about such miraculous results? It is all based on a simple psychological principle, “as you think, so you become.”

If you someone tells you “You’re stupid,” that’s of course a bad insult and will hurt you. However if you start to think “I am stupid,” and keep repeating this phrase over and over, then that is far worse. When someone tells you that you are stupid, then this is a negative outer-suggestion. When you start to think about it, then you are giving yourself, a negative auto-suggestion. If you keep thinking in a negative way, then your personal development will be harmed.

Meditation mantras have a positive meaning. They remind you that your true nature is something great: pure consciousness and boundless love. If you start to think about the best part of your being, you will begin to have more confidence in yourself and this will become apparent in your actions.

However, many people have read philosophical, spiritual or self-help books explaining these ideas, and yet they never realize these great truths in their everyday reality. It is not enough to just think about a good idea once, and then close the book. You need to think in a concentrated and systematic manner over a period of time in order to get results.

Meditation mantras have a special quality that helps in the task of concentrated, positive thinking: their very vibration has the capacity to concentrate and focus your mind. Some sounds, such as power drill breaking a pavement, can upset you greatly, while other sounds, like soothing music, can transport you to another world.

The syllables and words used in meditation mantras have been chosen according their sonic capacity, and they greatly aid the task of concentration and contemplation, as well as carrying a positive meaning.

The yogi turned to the man, who was a distinguished professor and said “You fool!”

The professor turned red, and began to shout at the yogi, who calmly watched the professor unwind.

The yogi then addressed the professor and said: “Now can you understand the power of a single word? All I did was utter the word “fool” and your behavior was changed in an instant!

15 Rules For Fat Loss

1. Eat 4-6 small meals day a day instead of the usual 2-3 large meals. Eating frequently will help regulate and boost your metabolism to burn more calories.

2. Consume whole foods that are high in fiber and low in sugar such as lean protein (lean beef, chicken, fish, and whey protein), fruits & vegetables (oranges, apples, strawberries, blueberries, broccoli, peppers, asparagus, carrots, nuts (almonds, cashews, & walnuts), and whole grains.

3. Eat low-glycemic carbohydrates such as vegetables, whole-wheat products and oatmeal instead of refined processed carbohydrates which usually come in a box or a bag.

4. Recommend consuming 25-35 grams of fiber per day. Since the average diet contains only 14 grams we could all use more fiber. Fiber will help satisfy hunger pangs as well as control insulin and blood sugar levels which tend to promote fat storage when they are elevated.

5. Eat some type of lean protein at each meal. Protein helps to satisfy hunger and provide the necessary building blocks to maintain lean body mass while losing body fat.

6. Consume adequate amounts of healthy fat foods such as olive oil, walnuts, almonds, Omega-3 fortified eggs or other Omega-3 products. Healthy fats are great antioxidants as well as help with brain function and many other essentials processes that take place in the body on a daily basis. Essential Fatty acids also help prevent certain diseases.

7. Recommend eating 5-10 servings of fruit and vegetables a day to meet your micronutrient needs. Vegetables also contain a good amount of fiber and help to control appetites and curb hunger.

8. Consume Green Tea or Water instead of calorie filled drinks such as soft drinks. Green Tea has many health benefits and should be drinking 1ml of non-caffeinated fluid for every calorie that you consume. This works out between (8-12) 8oz glasses of Green Tea or Water a day.

9. Balance your fat intake for the day. 1/3 should come from saturated fats, 1/3 from monounsaturated fats, and 1/3 from polyunsaturated fats.

10. If you want to start building habits then you need to follow a plan. Habits are formed by repetitively following a prescribed plan. Therefore map out your meals every day and follow them. If you follow your plan everyday for 2-3 weeks you will form habits that become part of your daily routine and you won’t even notice it. How do you think bad habits are formed? By repetitively doing something over and over again.

11. Include what I call “Superfoods” into your meal plan on a daily basis. These include but not entirely lean meat, salmon, low fat plain yogurt, tomatoes, spinach, mixed berries, whole oats, mixed nuts, olive oil, flax seeds(or flax meal), green tea, and various beans. These are just some of the “Superfoods” who should be incorporating into your daily meal plans.

12. Keep total fat intake under 30% for the day. This can be accomplished by not adding too many extra fats such as butter, sour cream, mayonnaise, etc. This doesn’t mean you have to completely eliminate these items, but do not eat them as a regular food item every day.

13. EXERCISE!! You can lose weight by just following a nutrition plan on its own but very few succeed at it and it takes much longer than when you eat properly as well as exercise. I am not talking about just getting on a treadmill for 30 minutes every other day. Though you can lose weight this way it is not the most efficient use of your time nor maximizing the ability to burn calories. The most effective way to lose fat is by strength training or some type of interval training utilizing strength training and cardiovascular exercises. A properly designed program can burn more overall calories in 20 minutes than 20 minutes on a treadmill. Also, the X factor in all this is that you will burn more calories per minute hours after you finished strength training because of the EPOC effect. Static exercise on a treadmill doesn’t produce this X factor.

14. Record what you eat and drink. You will be amazed at what you consume and not even realize you did it until you right it down and reflect back on the day. Keeping a food log is critical to your success because if modifications need to be made you need something to be able to evaluate and analyze. If changes aren’t happening like you had hoped the answer can usually be found in the food and or exercise journal.

15. Follow the 90% rule. If you can follow your plan 90% of the time then that is enough to have success with weight loss. If you find yourself breaking the rules more than 90% of the time then the chance of being successful with weight loss is not as likely. Your chances of failing increase significantly. Lose the all or nothing attitude and just take one day at a time. Reflect on your day before you go to bed at night and instead of getting down on yourself because you weren’t perfect just set goals to accomplish next day that would eliminate those errors.

Choose the Right Weight Loss Diet for You

In spite of all the advertising done by the big names in the weight loss diet business, there is no single diet plan that is right for everyone. There are, however, enough similarities among people that general rules can be made that apply to most people.

Sorting through all the fad diets that have come and gone and when you consider all of the research that has been done, it becomes clear that a good old-fashioned ‘balanced diet’ is probably the best weight loss diet that applies to the largest part of the population.

The real problem with eating plans that push protein rather than carbohydrates, or not eating protein with carbohydrates, or eating only vegetables, or eating only prepared chemically enhanced packaged foods is that these weight loss diets go well outside normal human eating patterns and cannot be sustained in the long run.

People get in such a panic to lose unwanted fat that they forget that you need the four traditional food groups, in proper balance, on a daily basis to maintain a healthy body. You need the energy to go about your daily activities, the fats and sugars to perform muscle maintenance and cellular repair and proper brain function. To get the required nutrients, you should be eating fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy and proteins and last but not least, water.

Of course, there those with special dietary needs. Some people, for example, can’t process dairy products. Others are sensitive to peanuts or other things so the sources of the essential nutrients may vary somewhat.

But the four traditional food groups, in the proper proportion, remain the undisputed recommendation of every reputable nutrition scientist.

Don’t let the pervasive marketing of the latest fad weight loss diet persuade you that you should stop eating a balanced diet.

One essential element of a balanced diet is insoluble fiber as gained from fruit, vegetables and grains. Insoluble fiber isn’t readily digested and as a result it helps digestion and in cleansing the digestive system. It is also a great help in reducing the production of bad (LDL) cholesterol. Melatonin - Does It Help Us Sleep?

The hormone melatonin has been credited with almost magical abilities from improving sleep to preventing osteoporosis, arthritis and other disabilities that are related to aging. Can melatonin perform all these wondrous feats? Melatonin has a direct effect on sleep, certainly, but most of the other benefits are due to Serotonin, from which melatonin is formed.

Should we be taking melatonin supplements then? No Most people already have sufficient melatonin in their bodies.

Melatonin is a hormone that is manufactured by a small gland located near in the centre of the brain called the pineal gland. One of the major functions of melatonin is to control the “circadian rhythm” that 24 hour body clock that controls when we feel sleepy among other things. This is because melatonin release is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by strong light. And this is where the problems lie for some of us.

Shift workers in particular have a raw deal here. They have to sleep during the day when melatonin levels are low and have to wake up and work at night, they are virtually working against their natural circadian rhythms.

Frequent travellers have a similar problem. Changing time zones often can completely confuse the body clock and can have a chronic effect on sleep patterns.

Women going through menopause can experience hormonal fluctuation and hence a messed up body clock (I speak here from personal experience!) Elderly people may be lacking in melatonin as the production of this hormone decreases with age.

Even just having the light on at night can affect melatonin release. Our ancestors used to go to bed when darkness fell and wake up with the sunrise, it’s a safe bet those guys never suffered with insomnia!

How do you know when your body clock is our of whack? Simple, you’ll take ages to wake up in the morning and you won’t feel sleepy at night. You’ll probably feel half alive during the day too waking up properly when it’s bed time!

Can we reset our body clocks by taking melatonin?

Some people have had good results by taking melatonin directly, others have noticed no benefit whatsoever (including me!) If you’re an older person or a shift worker, melatonin may be the way to go. For younger people I would say probably not, (there’s no harm in trying it however)

If you’re thinking of taking melatonin, start with a low dose (1 mg) and work up to 3 mg. If this doesn’t work it probably means lack of melatonin isn’t the problem and you’re better off trying something else.

The main problem with melatonin is that no on can tell us what the ideal dose is. There are tests going on now, but long term results are unknown as are effects on pregnant women.

And if you’re thinking of adding to your family soon, give melatonin a miss as it can act as a mild contraceptive.

What’s better than taking melatonin?

A better way to go would be to stimulate melatonin release naturally by eating tryptophan rich foods (turkey, bananas, milk, eggs…) These form serotonin in the body. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and a precursor for melatonin. For melatonin production to work properly, serotonin must be present.

This is how it works: tryptophan forms serotonin which converts to melatonin. Tryptophan is freely available in certain countries and on prescription in others. This can be an option if you can’t eat dairy or are a vegetarian.

Another great way to stimulate melatonin levels is to get enough sunlight during the day, especially in the morning. For locations without a lot of natural daylight, or for shift workers, lighboxes may be purchased. This is a most effective way to ensure your body clock is properly set.

In conclusion melatonin is very necessary for our well being, but direct supplementation doesn’t work for many. If you suspect your melatonin levels are low, consult a sleep specialist or try the suggestions in this article.
