The Latest in Contact Lenses and Designs

There is vast development and growth in the eye care industry today, particularly the contact lens sector, mainly because more and more people are starting to develop sight problems (because of consistent computer use and lengthy hours in front of the television set). Those with sight problems have two options, i.e. to wear glasses or to wear contact lenses.

There are problems to both of these options. Eyeglasses are not irritating to the eyes but it is definitely cumbersome because it can be bulky and inconvenient, i.e. showering, exercising, gym, swimming, etc. In the meantime, there’s the other alternative to eyeglasses, contact lenses. Some kids as young as 12-years-old have started wearing contact lenses instead of spectacles because they want to look good.

As the demographics of contact lens users grow, contact lens designers and developers are scampering around for a more effective method of correcting the sight of short-sighted, long-sighted people and people with astigmatism.

Bauch & Lomb recently came out with an ALTERNATIVE to contact lens. Instead of wearing contact lenses when you’re awake and removing them when you’re sleeping, the new Bauch & Lomb contact lens enables users to wear the contact lenses when they sleep and remove them when you’re awake! This revolutionary method of correcting sight is indeed the first of its kind and Bausch & Lomb called it the Vision Shaping Treatment. The Vision Shaping Treatment is one of the first in the field of overnight orthokeratology. When the user wears the lens to sleep, overnight, the lens reshapes the patient’s corneas overnight so that they can enjoy crystal clear vision throughout the day without having to wear contact lenses. But because each of those lenses is custom-made to suit the wearer, the cost of obtaining the vision correctional lenses can be quite hefty on the wallet for now. And since the effect is not permanent, the effect of the process wears off after some time, therefore, by nightfall, you may start needing your contact lens or glasses again.

One of the biggest problems associated with wearing contact lens is that the wearer will start feeling uncomfortable because the contact lens will start to feel a little dry, causing irritated, red eyes. The latest line of contact lenses contains self-moisturizing properties that helps keep dryness away. New contact lenses developed by ACUVUE also provide innovation that makes contact lenses suitable for people with high astigmatism. ACUVUE recently came up with a line of contact lenses that gives the contact lens wearer excellent vision and long-lasting comfort, making extended wear more comfortable. With innovation in design, the contact lenses today also provides better fitting to prevent the contact lenses from slipping around in the eye throughout the day – which is a common complaint.

3 Lessons from the Biggest Loser

All over the world, night after night, millions of people are riveted to their TV sets - but not to watch the latest soap, or CSI. Not to watch Jay Leno or Sex in the City. Not to see who outwits, outlasts and outplays others in Survivor. No - they are spellbound by the efforts of a small band of obese people trying to overcome the effects of years of overeating.

It’s not surprising that for so many people this is compulsive viewing. Obesity is the new epidemic. Fat children lumber around school playgrounds while their overweight mothers fill shopping carts with wrong choices. Then… they sit down at night to watch The Biggest Loser. They see dramatic weight loss and startling new body shapes beginning to emerge. They want the same results - and they begin to think it might be possible.

But who has four or five hours a day to work out? Who can afford a personal trainer several times a week? And who has the luxury of their own personal adviser on calorie content and smart food choices? The answer is: not many people. But you have to remember that this is television: it’s a false situation. As the players keep reminding themselves and the viewers: “This is a GAME. You have to make the most of your time here - it’s going to be so much harder out in the real world.”

IS it harder in the real world? Probably. But you can take lessons away from watching this reality show. You can make it work for you, as well as for the contestants. Here are three practical and useful lessons you can put to use immediately.

1. Put Weight Loss First.

In the Biggest Loser household WEIGHT LOSS COMES FIRST. Make it come first in your household, too. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? It is. In fact, so simple that many people just overlook it. They try to fit exercise and meal planning around everything else in their lives, instead of making it a priority.

Think: what is most important: getting the weight off, and becoming fit enough to put years on your life - or watching another TV show? Sit down with a pen and paper and allot at least one hour a day to planning meals, recording what you eat, and doing some form of exercise. You’ve still got 23 hours left to do everything else!

2. E is for Exercise - and Enjoy!

What else do you notice in the Biggest Loser household? The more they exercise, the more they seem to enjoy it. Oh sure, they grunt and they groan; they sweat and they complain. But as the weeks go on, you’ll hear them say things like: “I never thought I’d say that I look forward to working out - but now don’t feel right if a day goes past without exercise!”

The secret to enjoying exercise is finding what’s right for YOU. If you don’t really enjoy the gym, look for other forms of exercise. You need a mix of cardio and resistance training - but it doesn’t have to be on machines. Walk, swim, dance, climb hills, push a wheelbarrow in the garden… there are endless choices that can be fun for you. Research what happens to various muscle groups - and to your heart - when you exercise, and pick activities that you will enjoy.

3. Identify the Triggers.

Emotions run high when the contestants have to face their demons. Weight gain is rarely from just a physical cause. If you keep a food diary, and faithfully record not only what you eat but when (and why) you eat it, you’ll soon see a pattern of emotional eating. What are YOUR triggers? Boredom? Tiredness? Family arguments?

Once you have identified these triggers, you can start working on strategies to defeat them. This can be as simple as challenging yourself every time you want food. (”Am I hungry - yes or no? If I’m not hungry, then why do I want to eat? Am I really just thirsty? If I’m running to the fridge because I’m upset, is there something else I can do to feel better? Is there a long-term solution that will fix this forever?” and so on.) If you’re not yet ready to deal with the root cause, then be prepared with food that won’t add to your problems with the resulting rolls of fat. Make sure that you have ‘good’ food at hand - but also food that you LIKE.

These are just three of the lessons that anyone can take away from watching The Biggest Loser. And you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it all by yourself.

Waist Your Breath - Breathing For A Thinner Waist

The crunch exercise is the backbone of abdominal training. It develops the muscles of the abs to help you build that much-desired six-pack. But did you know that there is a way to do crunches that can actually decrease the size of your waist?

The key to this technique is the top position of the crunch where your abdominals are contracted as hard as they are able to.

When you’re in this top position, I want you to breathe in and out slowly a few times. Try to relax every other muscle except the abs. This breathing in and out will intensify the contraction (as you will find out very rapidly).

Here’s how it works:

The muscles of the abdomen are arranged in layers around your midsection, similar in concept to the rings in a tree. While you are contracting the rectus abdominus (the top-most front layer of your abs, also known as your six-pack) continuously, the deeper abdominal muscle fibers are relaxing and contracting each time you breathe.

Each time the deep fibers relax, your rectus abdominus (because it is contracting so hard) will squeeze them in a little more, making your waist-area a little smaller and tighter.

The reason this works to decrease the size of your waist is simple. Usually, most people’s abdominal muscles just kind of sit there. They don’t stay tight, therefore your midsection tends to slouch forward and outward.

This technique teaches your abdominals to maintain a degree of tightness and tone in them even when you are relaxed. This keeps your abs in, leading to a visually smaller waist.

The Symptoms of Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa

One of the most notable symptoms of anorexia and bulimia is the fast and excessive loss of weight. The also wear large clothing to hide their skinny build caused by dramatic weight loss. Complaining about being overweight as
food becomes central to there life, often finding an excuse not to eat and when they do there obsession with counting calories and choice of what to eat is fed by their obsession to lose weight. They become uncharacteristically uncomfortable around food and often display bizarre behaviour when eating such as playing with their food in an attempt to either prevent eating it, or trying to minimize caloric intake by restricting eating to diet foods only. They also cut the food up into tiny pieces, and try not to touch food with the lips. Sometimes they also spit the food out into a napkin so they can bin it later. So as you can see, they become fearful of eating around others because it threatens their attempt to lose weight. Eating in public is even more of a difficulty for sufferers. After eating meals they sometimes flush uneaten food down the toilet and also usually vomit the food up frequently while attempting to hide the behaviour but frequent toilet flushing or by running the shower to hide the noise associated with vomiting. This is known as bingeing and purging. They are in-effect starving themselves, in as much as 20% of cases, literally to death. They also use dieting pills and laxatives but keep these hidden from others. There bingeing eating is also kept hidden from others. They also hide food in strange places like under the bed, suitcases and bathroom cupboards either for disposal or later eating. They are also secretive about their eating patterns.

They can become obsessive when it comes to exercise, working out frequently above recommended guidelines. They develop muscle weakness and they complain about being overweight even when they are noticeably underweight, and may well appear to be malnourished.

There obsession leads to them monitoring their weight very often on an hourly basis. They develop feelings of guilt, depression and mood swings. Their feelings of self-worth center around there eating habits and how successful they are at losing weight fast. Obsessive thoughts center around eating, losing weight and cooking. They often cook for others but seldom eat with them, giving an excuse for not eating.

Some of the physical symptoms of anorexia and bulimia are, the loss of hair, the skin appearing to be turning pale. They can also suffer from low blood pressure. Women can also experience a disruption in their menstrual cycle which can become irregular or cease altogether. They often become constipated and have little or no interest in sexual activity. They are prone to headaches, dizzy spells and fainting. Their sleeping patterns can also become disrupted and can sometimes be disguised or explained away as insomnia. Constantly feeling cold and fatigued is also a symptom of anorexia and bulimia.

I Can Feel a Buzzing Energy Flowing Everywhere, from the Roof of My Mouth to the Tips of My Fingers

Yes, this is a sign that you are becoming very sensitive to energy and your awareness is turned inwards, to your feelings.

The more you put your attention on these subtle energies, the more they will grow and the more conscious you will become.

If you would like to have a go at healing, I suggest you start with your partner, or a willing friend. What I would suggest is, just have them sit in a chair and rest your hands on their shoulders. Both of you close your eyes and bring your awareness to what is happening in the energies.

Then after a minute or two move the hands so the palms of the hands cover the ears on each side of the head. Again, hold for about a minute, or two or three, until the time feels right to move on.

Then put the right hand on the forehead so the palm covers the third eye and the left hand on the back, at the base of the skull; again feel what is happening in the energies.

Move the hands down so the thumb and forefinger of the right hand rest on the collarbones, each side of the throat, on the front and the left hand rests on the back at shoulder level. Again, hold a while.

Move the hands back to the shoulder each side of the head standing behind the person and hold again; be aware of how you are feeling and the tone of the vibration within. Pay attention to the silence in the room and your breathing.

Move the hands to 2 inches/50 mm away from each ear and feel the energy connection to the person you are working on. After a minute or so move the hands closer and farther away from the person’s head. This is basically working in the aura.

After a while, say three minutes, gently move the hands out to about 1 ft/300mm away and waddle the fingers to release the energy and move away from the person. Rest for a couple of minutes more before opening the eyes.

It is a good idea while doing the healing to visualise roots growing out of your feet and grounding your energy field, so that any stale energy that may have been released, can go down the roots into the Earth for reprocessing.

Please think about what you felt and experienced. I am sure you will become very aware of the feeling especially if you work on a few different people. You may notice that each person has a unique vibration. The sensations when you work may change.

As you grow in confidence and experience, you will become much more aware of the subtle energies which permeate and surround the human body.

Internet Pharmacies: Way Ahead Of Community Drugstores

Online Canadian pharmacies have brought in a radical change in the entire pharmaceutical industry. Over a very short period of time, a growing number of Internet pharmacies have registered their online presence. Getting the prescribed drug is much easier than with the age-old traditional pharmacies. While it might be argued that filling drugs from a community drugstore has its own share of benefits, the fact cannot be negated that online pharmacies offer a far more sophisticated service when compared to the traditional pharmacies. Pharmacies transacting with patients over the Internet offer a unique combination of superior technology and unmatched quality standards that go a long way in making them an even better and viable option for the patients.

The primary benefit offered by an Internet pharmacy over community drugstores is the amount of convenience, safety and security involved in the entire transaction process. It might not be an easy option for a sick person to send somebody or even go on his own to the nearby drugstore to get the prescription filled. Apart from that, many patients are apprehensive about disclosing their identities or the medicines taken by them to the community pharmacies. An Internet pharmacy overcomes these shortcomings with an easy online order process backed by a delivery system that is safe, secure, and quick. The requested medicines are delivered within a short period of time to the patients. The patients are able to maintain full confidentiality of their identity in this case.

The rising prices of drugs are a serious concern for patients. Community drugstores seldom offer discounts on a purchase. Compared to other countries, the cost of filling prescription medicines in Canada is relatively lower due to the price regulations imposed by the Canadian government on the purchase of prescription medicines. The low value of Canadian dollar against U.S dollar, coupled with attractive discounts, makes Canadian pharmacies an affordable option to the patients in the US.

Community drug stores selling medicines over the counter, rarely offer enough information about a specific drug. Patients can either gain access to the drug literatures found in the respective packs or have to satisfy themselves with the half-baked opinions of the salesmen attending them in a community drugstore. Contrary to this, the Internet pharmacies offer authentic information on the various drugs they are dealing with. Unlike the hard to crack drug literatures, these pieces of information are presented in a lucid format that facilitates the common man to understand the effects and side effects of a particular drug.

Community drugstores, due to the lack of proper technology, might not have a robust back up of the patients’ case history. On the other hand, Internet pharmacies maintain a proper and confidential record of all the details of their respective clients. These details serve as valuable inputs to facilitate the patients in getting proper and prompt counseling on their health needs. Furthermore some Internet pharmacies also offer drug interaction checks to shield their patients from potentially harmful drug interactions.

The benefits of getting the prescriptions filled from an online pharmacy are manifold. Community drugstores may cater to a segment of consumers but when it comes to confidentiality, security, affordability and prompt customer support –

The Connection Between Brain Inflammation, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease

The evidence is overwhelming that sustained inflammation is the driving force of many degenerative diseases. Chronic inflammation is centrally implicated in heart disease, cancer and chronic viral conditioning such as Alzheimer’s.

Nowhere is damage more telling than chronic inflammation in the brain. Parkinson’s disease is inflammation burning away zones in the brain. Alzheimer’s involves many breakdown processes with inflammation at the forefront of these failed neurological processes.

What then, is an effective program to control brain inflammation? Antioxidants like Vitamin C can block free radicals that often stoke inflammation. Vitamin C and E also have had some success against dementia in clinical trials further substantiating their anti-inflammatory properties. Acetyl-L-Carnitine helps the brain cells make the energy they need for repair and renewal while Ginkgo Biloba combined with Phospholipids will also enhance antioxidant action.

Silicone Breast Implants Add Choices For Women

After more than ten years of controversy and scientific study, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved silicone gel breast implants for general usage. They are now available to all women ages 22 and higher for both reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery.

The availability of silicone implants will greatly expand the options for women seeking cosmetic breast augmentation. In many situations, they have real advantages over saline breast implants. They tend to look and feel more natural than saline implants. They are less prone to rippling or crinkling which can sometimes be felt and occasionally can become visible under the skin. They are lighter than silicone implants. However, they are thought by some to have a higher rate of capsular contracture, which is scarring around the implant and can make the breasts hard.

In countries where both silicone and saline implants have been available the vast majority of patients and surgeons select silicone implants. This is testimony to their advantages. In the US, we are likely to see a large number of patients select silicone breast implants.

But there will still be a place for saline implants. Some people might simply prefer not to have silicone placed in their body. Silicone implants are more expensive than saline implants. In some cases, the implant is used as a sort of platform to elevate the normal breast tissue rather than to give the breast the entirety of its shape. In this situation, saline implants function just about as effectively as silicone implants.

Silicone implants have not been shown to cause autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and lupus, as had been feared. But patients should realize that any breast augmentation procedure is essentially temporary. Body shape and anatomy can change, there might be problems with healing or the body’s reaction to the implant. At some point, it is likely that additional procedures may be necessary.
At Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery, we are already doing quite a few breast augmentations with silicone implants. I expect we will see many more people interested in the procedure in the next few months.

Lloyd M. Krieger, MD is a plastic surgeon and founder of Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California. More information is available on this
