Stop Smoking - Quit And Be A Winner!

If you are even slightly familiar with self-improvement techniques, you will be aware that the word QUIT is not part of our vocabulary.

However, if you are trying to quit smoking, when you do quit you will be a winner. It has been well documented as to the effects of smoking, for example:

1. Smoking Kills (do I need to go on?)

2. Coughing and short of breath, yellow teeth, yellow fingers, reduced fitness and raised blood pressure.

3. Women who smoke have reduced fertility, and men who smoke can suffer impotence.

4. People who smoke usually look older with more wrinkles, than a non-smoker of the same age.

There are plenty more effects, but we should not be looking for negatives, we should be looking for ways to stop smoking.

If you are reading this article because you genuinely are looking for help to stop smoking, for whatever reason, then you should be aware of one thing.

IF YOU DON’T REALLY WANT TO STOP SMOKING, YOU WON’T. All the stop smoking tips, and all the stop smoking aids in the world will not help you.

You really must have a burning (no pun intended) desire to stop smoking cigarettes.

On july 1st 2007, all the UK became smoke free when England introduced a smoking ban.

I am sure that a lot of people are looking for stop smoking methods, but I wonder how many are digging their heels in, refusing to be dictated to.

HOW TO STOP SMOKING Did you know, that only 3% of people stop smoking using willpower alone?

We can assume then, that it would be advisable to have as much help as we can find.

There are many stop smoking programs and many nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products on the market. Stop smoking hypnosis is also an area you may wish to consider.

I personally found that patches were a great help, but I still needed two attempts with them and I had some really vivid dreams.

A while before I finally made my mind up to stop smoking, my two young daughters had begged me to quit, because the didn’t want their dad to die.

I wasn’t that keen on the idea myself, but you know what it’s like to be a smoker, we can always find good reasons (excuses) to continue smoking.

As it transpired, the request from my girls was to be a major source of inspiration in my quest to give up the weed.

When you start a stop smoking campaign, you need to approach it almost like a military campaign. Not quite on the scale of ‘Desert Storm’, but you will need to recruit as many allies as possible, because the enemy is cunning, devious and dangerous.

You should set the date you are going to become a non-smoker, and you should make this day one which you think will be stress free.

You should write your campaign details down and refer to them daily.
Recruit friends and family to act as your stop smoking support, and try to avoid situations you know which will trigger off your craving for nicotine.

Whichever method YOU choose to finally quit smoking, you are doing something which will improve the quality of your life, and who knows how much improvement you are capable of.

So for anyone who has made the decision to quit, it is ok to say

QUIT, AND BE A WINNER!

Detox Recipe

A man given to too much drinking goes to a doctor. The doctor puts him through
various tests and finally pronounces his finding: “Sir, the problem seems to be that
there is too little blood in your alcohol!”

Our style of life, our food habits, negative emotions and sedentary habits seem to
contribute to the accumulation of unwanted guests called toxins in our physical system.

The tensions and stresses in our daily life, the air we breathe, the water we drink and
the pursuit of palate-tickling food are said to produce certain hormones which leave
behind toxins. When they are not expelled from the system, they cause degeneration
of cells leading to premature ageing, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, liver failure and so on.

Free Radicals

These toxins are known as free radicals , not to be confused with socialists, anarchists or
freewheeling intellectuals. They are molecules in search of a missing electron and,
in the process, gobble up neighboring healthy cells. Constant attrition of the healthy cells
causes the diseases aforementioned.

Nature itself has designed its own system of detoxification, through secretion of body fluids
like sweat, tears, saliva and the excretions through the intestines and the urinary tract.
These should be sufficient if only we do not overload the physical system through ingestion
of nicotine, caffeine, excessive sugar, salt, vegetable and animal fat, junk food and carbonated
beverages.

Unhealthy food habits are not the invention of modern man. The Roman Empire and the
Moghul Empire, among many others, came to their end because of their culture of excessive
indulgence.

Cows and dogs stop eating the moment they are ill. Being in tune with nature, they wait for
Nature to restore the balance in their system – by simply fasting.

Detox Techniques

Through the ages, man has evolved different techniques of detoxification. Fasting has been
practiced often as a religious obligation rather than its therapeutic value which is great. Bleeding
of sick people has been used in Europe to get rid of the “poisons” in the human body.

The ancient Romans used the Sauna to make them sweat the toxins out. It is still very popular in
Spas, hotels and even private homes of the affluent. Incidentally, the Roman baths also were
centers of intellectual discussions, political intrigues and discreet liaisons.

Colon cleansing is another old detox method. Many would frown, as it resembles some medieval
torture. The ancient system of Ayurveda in India employs massaging with oil literally trying to
squeeze out the toxins through the skin. The inevitable purging is prescribed at the end of every course
of treatment. This treatment combined with very restricted diet is said to rejuvenate man.. and woman.

In Tune with Nature

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said,” Nature cures, not the physician.” Most nature cure
systems have resorted to drugless and less invasive treatment to restore health. They believe that
man can enjoy good health by living in accordance with the laws of nature. Secondly,
fever, cold, inflammations and digestive disorders are nature’s way of getting rid of toxins .
Serious illnesses result when these processes are suppressed through drugs.

Water therapy, oil therapy, the Chinese Reflexology and mud therapy are practices related to
nature cure systems. But the most effective and practical approach seems to lie through food therapy,
the art and science of eating rightly and judiciously in normal times and eating less and fasting more
in times of sickness.

Health food advocates, therefore, are not mere faddists when they point the way to wisdom
in choosing the right kind of food habits. Lighter the diet, the lighter the body. This leads to
lightness of mind. All together, they make for an abiding feeling of good health.

Raw Foods Are Nature’s Gift

Little John was under a new discipline at home. His parents had introduced a strict diet of
no red meat and only fish and vegetables. While eating his dinner, he was surprised to come across
a piece of bone. He asked the mother, “What shall I do with this?” The mother said,” Put it away
with the thing you are not going to eat.” John promptly stuck the bone into the cauliflower on his plate!

Young or old, eating vegetables, fruits and herbs has to be an act of will. The easy way
to fall in love with them is to juice them, drink and enjoy the feeling of lightness and health.
According to nature cure advocates/practitioners -

· Raw foods contain essential nutrients that are mostly destroyed during cooking.
· Juices of vegetables and fruits are effective in the treatment of a variety of diseases
· You can make juices out of vegetables like carrot, tomato, cucumber, beet, spinach,
radish, celery, and so on. Most fruits lend themselves to juicing.
· Wheat grass juice is rich in chlorophyll and a complete food in itself. It is an
excellent detox agent when taken as a fasting diet. You can grow it at home
and cut off the grass with a pair of scissors on the eighth day after sowing.

There are many brands of juicers available in the market. Examples are: Oscar Vital Max,
Green Power Hippocrates and Champion 2000. They do a wonderful job of preserving the
flavour and the nutrients of fruits and vegetables. But juices lose their properties fast and
so it is always better to drink them fresh.

So here is drinking juice to your health!

Caution: Before undertaking any detoxification process, one is advised to take advice
from a qualified professional medical practitioner.

Paxil Warning

“FDA warns of suicide risk for Paxil”

Do you remember where you were when the FDA ran this warning:

MAY. 12 12:08 P.M. ET

“The antidepressant Paxil may raise the risk of suicidal behavior in young adults, GlaxoSmithKline and the Food and Drug Administration warned in a letter to doctors. A recent analysis of clinical trial data on nearly 15,000 patients treated with both Paxil and dummy pills revealed a higher frequency of suicidal behavior in young adults treated with the drug, according to the letter.”

Suicidal behavior! What? This drug was supposed to help reduce depression and other emotional stresses, and yet it actually was found to increase suicide? How can that be?

There were 11 suicide attempts — none resulting in death — among the patients given Paxil in the trials. Just one of the dummy pill patients attempted suicide. All antidepressants now carry warnings on their labels cautioning patients and doctors of the risk of suicidal behavior.

That’s comforting.

What have we learned since then?

Drugs excite or depress the nervous system. What if there were ways to cause natural changes to the nervous system that would allow the body and mind to heal? There are in fact Amino Acids from FOOD that will make a difference.

Did you know that Phenylalanine is used to reverse Fatigue, Depression, and Mental fog?

Did you know that Tyrosine is used to reverse Fatigue and Depression?

Did you know that Glutamine is used to reduce Fatigue, Depression, and Mental fog?

These three compounds are natural amino acids that work to feed the brain and nervous system. They are integral to your health and healing. They carry no warnings and do not cause serious side effects.

This might just be a breath of fresh air for you to think there were no options to stress and emotional health.

Way Beyond Drugs

Even beyond nutrition there are many other emotional de-stress protocols to use to help change emotional outcomes.

Emotions generated in the unconscious mind remain there. These feeling are the result of a complicated interaction between different parts of our minds and between the mind and the outside world. Many are unpleasant, painful or embarrassing, and in some way unacceptable to us or society, so we repress them. We push them down deep so we don’t have to experience them.

We bury our feelings alive. What do they do? They sit and fester until a moment they seek attention. Then out of now where an old feeling (it’s like an old program) rears its ugly head for us to deal with it. How do we deal with it? What plans do we have to do this?

A plan devised to confront and change the negative neurology, our reaction, needs to be implemented. There are a number of ways to significantly change our reason for stress and specifically, depression. Learning how to use them could radically alter your life.

Dr Peter Lind is a practicing chiropractor utilizing newly developed procedures and protocols to remove the affects of stress on the body. He continues helping hundreds of people on his website

Nutrition and Weight Loss - Carbohydrates, Do I Need Them?

Many of us choose to cut out a specific food group in our diets as a means for weight loss. The most popular choice seems to be excluding Carbohydrates from our daily diets. But do we need them, and are we putting our bodies at risk by excluding this food group?

The best bet when weighing the options of a no-carb died is to go low-carb, and to monitor which carbohydrates you are including in your diet. We need to make sure to choose unrefined foods rich in carbohydrates over the processed foods, which tend to lack the vitamins and nutrients that our bodies need, as well as being a cause for both diabetes and hypoglycemia.

Carbohydrates are used to supply our bodies with the energy we need to function. Period. We tend to confuse the lack of exercise and the increased consumption of the WRONG carbohydrate consumption with a more healthy carbohydrate consumption. What we need to be focusing on is choosing the right carbohydrates, along with exercise.

The main reason our bodies will store excess carbohydrates as fat is when we are consuming more calories than we are burning in the day. The simple solution to this is to monitor our carbohydrate intake, and to incorporate an exercise plan into our day to ensure that we are burning these calories we are consuming.

The best time of day to get your daily carbohydrates is in the morning. You will have all day to use the energy provided and to burn off what you have taken in.

Our bodies need carbohydrates. There ARE some that are better for us, and we should make sure we are consuming the right amount of the right carbohydrates for a healthy diet and overall healthy lifestyle.

Practice Jnana Yoga for Optimum Mental Health

Anyone who cares about their health often focuses on keeping his or her body in peak condition. Who considers the health of the mind? A psychiatrist or a psychologist is concerned with behavior, and mental health, but how can Yoga help you?

We have all heard Yoga is a good “mind and body exercise,” but how does a Yoga student exercise his or her mind through Yoga practice. How can Yoga help you develop mental strength? Let’s look at one of the many styles of Yoga, to find answers, and acquire optimum mental health.

Jnana Yoga is the union of mind, body, and spirit, through acquired knowledge. It is true that reading will make your mind sharp, but what do Jnana Yogis read? Traditionally, Jnana Yogis read Hindu scriptures to expand their knowledge.

Yoga has been around for thousands of years. The Brahmin caste would have had more access to Yogic philosophy, and the scriptures (Vedas), than the average person, at that time.

This same parallel can be made to any holy man of any religion. Access to written knowledge, books, and Holy Scriptures was not common place, in any religion, hundreds of years ago. There was a time when the average person was forbidden to have a copy of the Bible. The early Bibles were very big, expensive to produce, and not meant for the public to interpret. Whether we like it, or not, this is a part of history.

Now, let’s fast forward to the 21st century. Millions of new computer users are accessing the Internet every year. So, how is it that more people, than ever, are disconnected from their mind, body, and spirit? We have attention disorders, multi-tasking, and many distractions to keep us far from tranquility.

Even in a Yoga class, you may hear a cell phone go off - despite the fact there are rules and a sign on the entrance of most Yoga studios. The sign might read, “Turn your cell phone off,” but people do not see it, even if it is right under their nose. Why?

Unfortunately, people do not read or pursue vital information. Cable television has hundreds of channels and the Internet has millions of sites. Do you really think the masses are trying to expand their minds by reading?

Jnana Yoga practice, and regular meditation, raises the “Level of Consciousness.” Yet it seems that prosperity seems to breed poor mental and physical health. When given the choice, children would rather play video games than watch the History Channel. Therefore, many adults must be getting in touch with their “inner child.”

Now, let’s come full circle. Entertainment is a wonderful thing, but we should be deliberate in our efforts to challenge our minds. Creativity cannot be found in games that are programmed or in viewing stories where you can easily guess the ending.

Your mind must be challenged on a daily basis by reading good quality writing and watching entertainment that is true art. The modern Jnana Yoga practitioner has much more access to education, information, art, and entertainment. However, he or she must be much more selective than ever before.

1RM Made Easy

1RM stands for one repetition maximum. It is the amount of weight that you can lift only once with perfect form. Typically your one rep max is measured by a few basic exercises such as the squat or bench press, but it can be tested using any exercise.

You want to measure it so you know what weight to lift when you first start your program. Read on to find out more.

More often than not, your 1 rep max is the standard tool professional trainers use for measuring results and gains in strength. 1RM needs to be determined before you start an exercise program, when switching an exercise program, and/or when testing for results.

So how do you find your 1RM and what should you do with it? To find your 1 rep max, it is recommended that you warm-up for 5 minutes and perform one warm-up set (using light weights) for each muscle group.

Once you have warmed up, you want to choose an exercise and choose a weight that you can lift approximately 6-12 times using perfect form.

For example, let’s say you choose to do a 1 rep max test for the bench press. You decide to lift a 10 pound dumbbell and discover that you can only lift that weight 7 times until your muscles are completely fatigued.

*One Rep= 100%

*Two Reps= 95%

*Three Reps= 90%

*Four Reps= 88%

*Five Reps= 86%

*Six Reps= 83%

*Seven Reps= 80%

*Eight Reps= 78%

*Nine Reps= 76%

*Ten Reps= 75%

*Eleven Reps= 72%

*Twelve Reps= 70%

By using the above percentages, you can see that the ability to lift a weight 7 times until muscle failure is equal to 80% of your 1RM. Use a calculator and divide the weight you lifted by the percentage. That will give you the 1 rep max for any exercise. Stay with me here… this is easy!

So let’s finish our example: we lifted a 10 pound weight for 7 repetitions. The chart above tells us that 7 repetitions equals 80% of our 1 rep maximum. So we take 10 divided by 80% (.80). Our trusty calculator tells us that the answer is 12.5 pounds. That is our 1 rep maximum.

I would record this number in your progress chart. Every month I would go back and perform another 1RM test for the bench press. You will see that your 1RM has increased! This is one of the many ways to track your progress or gains in strength, but as mentioned before it is the one most widely used by professional trainers.

When you choose a strength training method, you will want to use approximately 70% of your 1RM for toning and sculpting. Just remember… if you are a beginner stick with the basic 3 sets of 12 repetitions for each muscle group. Your muscles should be fatigued on rep number 12. As you can see from the chart, 12 repetitions is 70% of your 1RM.

Final Word On 1 Rep Max

* Take a 1 rep maximum test for your chest and quads. It’s easy to do and will give you a better overall picture of your results.

* Log your results on the progress chart.

* Re-take your 1RM each time you change your program and/or want to measure results.

* Use approximately 70% of your 1RM for each exercise thereafter.

Hurricanes and Hair Loss

For those individuals who are worried about hair loss at least during the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season with the wind blowing fiercely you will not have to worry about having a bad hair day because you don’t have any. Isn’t it nice to know that there are benefits to being bald and not having very much hair?

Imagine if you will being trapped in a violent hurricane storm and you are a newscaster and your hat blows away? All of a sudden the whole world is looking at your messed up hair, but if you are bald you look the same issue always do and no one would ever know the difference. Hair loss does have benefits and one of the benefits will be during the hurricane season.

If you watched Fox News during the 2005 Atlantic tropical hurricane season you would have seen many of your famous newscasters and reporters out getting literally blown away by hurricane and gale force winds. Had those reporters been bald like a couple of the guys on the weather Channel they would’ve been looking fine, but instead their hair do was blowing all over the place and they looked rather silly and somewhat stupid.

So during the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season you may want to get your hair completely shaved off and go with the new hurricane hair do, which is the bald look. Consider all this 2006.

Sex Can Be Good For Your Health

Erotic Exercise is the best exercise you can give yourself and your partner. Erotic Exercise involves the contraction of muscles in your arms, legs and abdomen. This is the same kind of workout you get at a gym. Now which exercise do you prefer?

Sexual exercise will always make sex alot better and keep you feeling fantastic mentally and physically. Having sex 2 or more times a week can lower the risk of a heart attack over the course of 10 years than men who have sex less often.
(2005 Journal Of Epidemiology and Community Health.)

Erotic Exercise will improve your cardiovascular into a better physical condition. This will improve a happier heart.

Frequent ejaculation (April 17th, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association), might help protect your prostate from cancer. Ejaculating regularly could lower risk of cancer because cancer-causing substances get flushed out of the body instead of staying in the prostate. Well that makes alot of sense to me.

Sexual activity is a great stress reliever. Satisfying sex can exhilarate a mood to high levels. Orgasm releases tension. Sex is a vigorous form of exercise. Having 2 or more orgasms every week, you will live a better life than those who only have a orgasm fewer than once a month. How sad is that?

I know that I always feel better after some good old erotic exercise.

Erotic Exercise. It doesn’t get better than this. Remember. Sex can be good for your health. Let’s get busy….

My Pyramid To Health And Fitness

Remember the old Food Pyramid that we were all taught in school? You know, the one that told us to eat more ‘grains and carbohydrates’ than anything else? Last January the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a new symbol and interactive food guidance system called “MyPyramid”. This picture, which replaces the Food Guide Pyramid introduced in 1992, is part of an overall system that emphasizes the need for a more individualized approach to improving diet and lifestyle. The system embodies the recommendations of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which advise how proper dietary habits can promote health and reduce the risk of major chronic diseases for people two years of age and older.

True fitness experts are not huge fans of ‘one size fits all’ nutritional programs. As a matter of fact, the reasons most diets fail is that they try to fit you (an individual!) into a program designed for EVERYONE. Honestly, did we ever believe that one dietary recommendation (the old Food Guide Pyramid) was valid for everyone in the USA?

This strong aversion to the ‘one size fits all’ dietary guideline is exactly why we like the new MyPyramid so much! Take for example this quote copied directly from the MyPyramid website: “One size doesn’t fit all. MyPyramid Plan can help you choose the foods and amounts that are right for you. For a quick estimate of what and how much you need to eat, enter your age, sex, and activity level in the MyPyramid Plan box. For a detailed assessment of your food intake and physical activity level, click on MyPyramid Tracker” (source: mypyramid.gov).

-> WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THE NEW GUIDELINES:

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has done a fine job of updating the Food Guide Pyramid and adding specifics that we find helpful. For example:

* MyPyramid make a distinction between ‘grains’ and ‘whole grains’, which is critical for life-long health and fitness.

* Rather than just suggesting we ‘eat fruits and vegetables’ (which may prompt some to drink fruit juice and think they’re being healthy!), MyPyramid encourages the consumption of a broad range of fresh fruits and vegetables while at the same time discouraging fruit juices (which are often lacking in nutrition and full of empty calories).

* MyPyramid suggests that we consume low-fat dairy products, rather than just dairy products. Some milk, and most cheeses, are FULL of saturated fat and may be harmful. The new recommendations take this into account and prompt us to look for healthy dairy choices.

* Just like it does with the dairy category, MyPyramid tells us to search out low-fat protein choices like fish and nuts. The new guidelines even teach us about healthy oils vs. harmful fats!

* Finally, and most importantly, MyPyramid actually discusses exercise! FINALLY! The guidelines demonstrate the difference between moderate and vigorous activity, and provide broad recommendations targeted towards the average American.

-> WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE NEW GUIDELINES:

* The MyPyramid website (mypyramid.gov) has a section called ‘My Pyramid Plan’ that estimates BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). In other words, this site estimates how many calories we should consume each day. The problem is that they (the USDA) use only our age, sex and physical activity level to determine our caloric goal. No mention is made of height differences or the amount of lean muscle mass we have on our frame. Lean muscle mass is a HUGE factor in determining caloric needs, so we were disappointed to see that it’s not included in these calculations. Broad generalizations like this fail to take into account individual differences, and thus are almost always sure to be inaccurate for many of us.

* The ‘Physical Activity’ section of MyPyramid fails miserably in that it doesn’t provide the exercise education we need in order to be successful. No mention is made of the differences between aerobic and anaerobic exercise, or the role of resistance exercise in a healthy lifestyle.

While the new USDA guidelines are certainly MUCH better than the old Food Guide Pyramid, we were still discouraged to see that MyPyramid does not fully address exercise. Until we as a nation understand the basic facts about exercise, we will continue to struggle with fat and weight issues.

Take the time to visit mypyramid.gov and browse around for a while. It’s worth a look!
