Pain Management: Treat Carpal Tunnel - Wrist Pain Without Drugs

In alleviating sore wrists, sore hands and other recurrent tendonitis and irritated neurology, symptoms often attributed to Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), we look at the cause not the symptoms.

We find that the basic cause of many forms of CTS, wrist Pain are what we call, Repetitive Muscle Stress, reactive muscle imbalances. That is muscles not working together and communicating with the brain. The tendon, joint, and nerve injury is secondary.

Remember, Muscles pull bones; bones do not pull on muscles.

The bottom line cause of CTS, Wrist Pain is the muscles in the forearm get very stressed, tight and pulls on the Carpal Tunnel, which eventually collapses.

The stress on the wrist will begin to irritate and injure the tendons and nerves passing through the wrist area, greatly increasing the pain intensity. In time the injury may become so intense that you will be unable to use your fingers.

What is a Reactive Muscle?

Reactive muscles are muscles that weaken when another muscle, the reactor, is activated. The weakened muscles can lead to muscle pain, and the overly strong reactor muscles can cause tendon and joint pain.

Reactive muscle combinations may be created by sudden injury or by repetitive muscle movements (as found in playing musical instruments, using computer keyboards, etc.).

Muscles play a tug of war with each other. They have to learn to work together and communicate with the brain.

A Grocery Store Check-out Clerk suffered constant pain in her shoulders and couldn’t raise her arms to put pullover sweaters on or off. She also had severe wrist pain. Going through the movements involved in a checkout procedure, sliding packages along the counter with one hand while punching cash register keys with the other triggered multiple reactive muscle imbalances. Correcting these muscle imbalances relieved the pain and enabled her to raise her hands over her head. This also deleted the stress in her wrist.

A Creative Musician, who was recording her own compositions using a synthesizer keyboard, was so troubled with pains in her arms and wrists that she was unable to continue her recording sessions. Resting for several days at a time was no help; since whenever she went back to playing the keyboard, the problems would return.

We had her sit down and mimic playing the keyboard and corrected the resulting reactive muscle imbalances. Her pain level was much reduced.

She telephoned a couple of days later to tell us she was feeling better and better, and had started up her recording sessions again.

Snoring and Smoking - Partners in Crime

Did you know that snoring may have a connection with smoking? There is much information published about the dangers of smoking. The negative effects of smoking on heart, circulatory and respiratory health are widely recognised. A less well publicised effect of smoking, however, is that it increases the chances that you will snore. Studies showing the link between smoking and snoring have been published in medical journals such as the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. These studies have concluded that smokers are more likely to suffer from habitual snoring (defined as loud, sleep-disturbing snoring, a minimum of three nights a week) than non-smokers. It was also found that ex-smokers had a higher incidence of snoring than people who had never smoked. In addition, those exposed to passive smoking on a regular basis, also had a higher chance of developing heavy snoring.

The evidence points to a very clear conclusion: if you smoke or are constantly exposed to environmental smoke (passive smoking) you are more likely to be a chronic snorer. The main idea behind these findings is that the chemicals contained in tobacco smoke can irritate the linings of the airways. This causes them to inflame, which in turn makes them narrower. This narrowing of the airways, including the nasal passages, obstructs the normal flow of air when breathing and results in snoring.

Some scientists also think that, when asleep, the body suffers from a form of nicotine withdrawal which can cause chemical changes within cells related to the breathing process and these changes can contribute to snoring. A third school of thought is that nicotine causes damage to the nerves controlling the airways. Again, this can lead to snoring.

You can now see that there are very strong links between smoking and snoring. They are also connected in other ways. Smoking does not just damage the person smoking - the effects of passive smoking can also be serious. In the same way heavy snoring reaches out to destroy the sleep of anyone within earshot of the snorer. Like smoking, snoring can cause a lot of stress and strain relationships. Back Pain - Don’t Take It Laying Down

If you have acute (short term) low back pain, doctors can help you by advising you to stay as active as possible, prescribing medication if the pain makes it difficult to stay active and prescribing manipulation if you need it.

Today after 15 months of constant pain, 3 epidural injections, every test known to modern man I am facing major surgery, a double fusion and single disc replacement. The opioid pain killers I take when really bad ensure that I am not fully aware of things happening around me, they make you dry, high and addicted.

What have I learned from all of this, how can you avoid ending up like me, well it’s simple. If you injure your back for the first time, take the advice of the health professionals, if you do not exercise, start, never stop, loose weight and pay particular care to your core muscles. These are the muscles that support your spine, they wrap around you like a corset and support your spine. Core muscles are below your ab’s and need targeted exercises to activate them.

Pilates and Yoga are both great systems for strengthening your core, although Pilates is probably the best for your lower back, my friend and I started Pilates together, I started because I could not move with this injury, she started because she could not do more than 30 minutes gardening without back pain.

It has helped me, however my damage is to great and needs surgical intervention, my friend, well after 1 year of Pilates can now garden all day, carry in the shopping, play with her children without any hint of back pain!

So, keep moving, exercise, loose weight and never stop, if you are unlucky and have already reached my stage, look forward not back, be positive, join a support group and remember there is always someone worse off.

Water Fasting and Detoxification

There are a lot of ways to detoxify your body that involve expensive or complicated medical programs but simply fasting may be the best way of all. When you stop eating solid food for a day or two and drink only water or juice the body shifts its focus away from digestion and expends energy on restoring bodily balance by detoxification and eliminating other wastes. The body, when left to its own devices, knows what it needs and what it doesn’t and works hard to get rid of the bad stuff given a chance. Fasting is the body’s way of cleaning house. Normally the body gets energy from glucose, which is a form of sugar taken from the food we eat. We either get this directly from food or the liver will store it in a form called glycogen. However, when you start to fast this sugar gets used up in the first day. If you continue to fast past the first day, the body shifts its type of glucose fuel supply from food over to fat from your fat reserves. This is called ketosis, but during this two to three day conversion there is not enough glucose from fat yet so the body also breaks down a small amount of amino acids from your muscles. This conversion of muscles into glucose is called catabolizing and is at its greatest on the second and third days of a fast. By the end of the third day of a fast, the body is running almost exclusively on body fat with only a reduced amount of muscle being consumed. If you were to water fast for two weeks in most cases you would lose less than a pound of muscle assuming you had enough fat reserves to last that long. It is crucial, of course, that you drink plenty of water during a fast. You can go without food for a fairly long period of time with positive health benefits all along the way but not drinking enough water is detrimental in almost all cases.

Most of us have more body fat than is good for us so using up some during a fast is healthy but the big benefit from fasting is because the body will search out and consume energy from unused or non-vital sources. Your body naturally will try to maintain muscle mass and would much rather use up non-vital things in your body. This may include toxins, tumors, waste material and many other disease or degenerative conditions that can be converted into fuel. Certainly fasting is not a cure all for all ailments or a miracle cure and there are limits to how much it can heal but a whole host of medical conditions have been cured or alleviated by simply fasting.
