Fitness Trainers - How Can You Find A Fitness Trainer Who Knows What They Are Talking About?
More and more people are recognizing the positive health effects of exercise and a healthier diet. However, in today’s fast paced life it is harder and harder for people do the research and find the correct program to meet their goals. Enter the fitness trainer. Fitness trainers will improve your motivation, increase your likelihood of success and help you stay on track with your goals.
There is a method to find a fitness trainer who will work well with your planned goals. Find out their educational background. The International Health, Raquet and Sports Club Association (IHRSA) recommends accreditation through an independent agency for all schools and programs that graduate personal fitness trainers. Although this doesn’t rule out poor trainers it does help to weed out the weak programs.
Ask for references from your fitness trainer and check them out. If the previous customers were happy you are more likely to have found a fitness trainer who can help you achieve your goals.
And don’t rule out the personality factor. If you don’t get along with the trainer or don’t feel comfortable then you will have more trouble staying focused and motivated to achieve your goals. Trust your instincts. You don’t want your time with the fitness trainer to be stressful for you.
Fitness trainers should also receive continuing education throughout the year. Ask! If you don’t ask you won’t know and without continuing education fitness trainers won’t be able to give you the best possible program. Share your goals and your concerns. Fitness trainers can give you more for your money if they know where to start and what your fears are.
When fitness trainers start with a new client they do a physical assessment that determines the clients current level of fitness, their knowledge of the area they want to be trained as well as their current diet. From this assessment they develop a program that is specific to the client and the changes the client is willing to make.
Personal fitness trainers will help to move your program forward faster and with greater success than working without a trainer. However, a poor fitness trainer can actually set you back and increase your chances of injury. How? Because most people who use the services of a trainer are either new to a gym situation or are attempting to achieve goals they believe will stretch the limits of their current physical abilities. These are the very people who will be pushing themselves to lift more weight, run further and faster. Without the guidance of a good fitness trainer these are also the very people who will lift too much too quickly or run too many miles each week initially and will be injured.
Physical fitness is important to your health, feeling of well-being and your energy level. Using a well-trained personal fitness trainer will increase your success rate and improve your level of conditioning beyond what even you thought you could achieve.

Why Switch To Vegetarianism
If you’ve eaten meat and animal products your whole life, you might think, why switch to a vegetarian diet? You’ve lived your whole life eating eggs, hamburgers, hot dogs, poultry, so why switch now?
There could be many reasons to switch. Start by looking in the mirror. Are you at a healthy weight? Do you look and feel good most of the time? Do you wake up energized? Or do you wake up tired and sluggish?
How is your general health? Is your blood pressure within a healthy range? Are your cholesterol and blood sugar ranges normal? If they’re not, consider what you’re eating on a daily basis.
How do you feel after eating? Do you feel energized, as if you’ve fed your body what it needs? Or are you tired and dragged out? Do you often need a nap after eating? Is that what food is supposed to do for us, make us tired and sleepy?
Not really. Food should nourish and feed the body and leave us energized and refreshed. The human body is a machine and needs fuel that keeps it running in peak condition. When we’re fat, with high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, high cholesterol and other unhealthy conditions, it’s like a car engine that hasn’t been tuned or isn’t running on the optimal type of gasoline it needs to run efficiently.
Your body is the same way. It needs the right kind of fuel to run at peak efficiency, and when you’re eating high-fat meat, or meat that’s been fed antibiotics throughout its life, that’s simply not the kind of fuel the human body evolved to run on.
Try eating vegetarian for a week or a month. See if you don’t feel different, more mentally acute and more physically fit and energized. At least reverse the portion sizes you’ve been eating, and make meat more of a side dish, if you can’t stop eating meat altogether. Even that change can make a big difference in your overall health and well-being.
Have a great day,

How To Ease Tooth Pain Until You Can Get To The Dentist
Maybe you have a cavity that you’ve been putting off getting filled. Or maybe you got hit in the mouth playing sports. Or perhaps your tooth started aching and hasn’t gotten any better. Regardless of the reason, tooth pain can cause major discomfort until you can get to the dentist to see what’s wrong.
The first thing you should do if you are having tooth discomfort is make an appointment to see the dentist right away. If it is a true emergency, like a broken jaw, you should go to the emergency room. If you’re in pain over the weekend or when your dentist’s office is closed and you have an emergency like a lost tooth or broken filling, you may want to consider visiting an emergency dental clinic. Most dental offices, however, will do their best to get you in right away and set aside time slots or will bump other non-emergency patients in order to see you.
In the meantime, there are a number of things you can do to ease tooth pain until you see the dentist, depending on the injury:
If you break or crack your tooth, you should contact your dentist or go to an emergency dental center within 30 minutes in order to maximize your chances of saving your broken tooth. In the meantime, however, rinse your mouth out with warm water to clean blood from the area.
Your jaw may be swelling and painful. If this is the case, apply a cold compress on the area. This will keep the swelling under control and minimize bruising. Over the counter medicines such as Tylenol can alleviate the pain until you get to the dentist.
If on the other hand you have knocked your tooth completely out, you will first need to hold rinse off the root of the tooth in water if it’s dirty. Be sure to stop the drain so the tooth doesn’t go down. Leave all the tissue fragments attached to the root, so don’t scrub it. Gently place your tooth back into its socket and hold it there. If that isn’t possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk and get to the dentist as soon as you can.
You can alleviate the pain that goes along with a knocked-out tooth with a cold compress and a medicine such as Tylenol or Advil.
Over the counter pain medications such Tylenol, Advil, ibuprofen, and other types of are usually the most effective in relieving tooth pain until you can get to the dentist. In addition, there are some medications you can purchase in the drugstore that are designed specifically for tooth pain. These include topical medications and numbing agents you can apply directly to the tooth or the area that is causing the pain. In addition, rinsing the mouth with warm water can also help to ease the pain of a toothache before you can see the dentist.

Are Anti-Aging Specialists of Much Use?
The accepted definition of ‘growing old’ is the physical and mental decline which occurs after reaching sexual maturity.
This physiological deterioration progressively progresses into a weakened immune system which renders one more vulnerable to disease, frailty, a reduced mental function and well…death.
Makes you cringe eh?
Well, it is part of the process of living, and though I’ve not been to the other side (and am not in any rush to do so any time soon), most religious and psychology therapists do state that going to Great Beyond after our time here on earth is not such a painful experience.
But enough of that…we are trying to see about delaying aging right?
Right.
Well, In this day and age when a fascination with retaining our youth is the in-thing, it really is not news that the search for information on using or hiring the services of an anti-aging specialist is very common both off and on the net.
Defined, an anti-aging specialist is one whose sole purpose is to provide treatment and give information on the latest techniques and resources for longevity and maintaining the highest quality of optimum health.
Now, to ensure that just the best ones are available to the public, it’s been made public that the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine now gives credentials to any and every anti-aging specialist by qualifying the physicians based on their standards and criteria.
So now that you have an idea of how to find and what exactly makes a named anti-aging specialist what they attest to be, it must be considered though: as expensive as these specialized doctors must be, will such an investment into their services be worth the expense?
Even so-called anti-aging specialists will attest to the fact that nothing comes closer to achieving anti-aging effects in our body as exercise and a proper diet.
This is where the secret is.
Other factors that need to be added even to whatever it is that you may learn from an anti-aging specialist are that the following come in as very beneficial for achieving lasting anti-aging solutions.
These include:
-Detoxification
-Getting enough rest
-Laughter
-Positive Thinking.
-Keeping company with friends and family (that raise your spirits)
-Remembering to just take things easy.
Trying to include the points above in your path to reversing the aging process definitely can’t hurt and very well may help immensely.

Want Health? Leave the Country
The United States is the richest, most powerful nation on earth. It cultivates the best doctors, the best training, the best researchers, the best facilities, the best technology, and the most dollars.
Therefore, it is logical to think that the United States’ health is ranked first, without contest, in the world. Shockingly enough, the World Health Organization ranks America’s health as only 37th in the world. A pathetic 37th.
It is also logical to think that Americans, provided with such expensive and sophisticated health care, are the longest lived people on earth.
The fact is that America’s longevity only ranks 26th in the world, behind such countries as France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, Malta, Israel, and our neighbor, Canada.
Do you want to live longer? You have a better chance if you leave the United States and live in some other country.
The U.S. spends billions of dollars on drugs every year. It spends 1.55 trillion dollars on health care (or, more accurately, “disease care”), which is about one-half of what the entire world spends on health care.
How is it possible that we spend one-half what the rest of the world spends on health care, yet our over all health ranks 37th in the world?
In spite of all the drugs, procedures, doctors, research, hospitals, and money spent on our health (or, more accurately, diseases), America’s health and disease statistics are very sad indeed.
· Every year, four out of five Americans die of heart disease or cancer—diseases that are usually preventable, not inevitable as many of us think.
· Approximately one million Americans or fifty per cent die of heart disease alone.
· There are approximately 4,000 heart attacks every day; 50% which are fatal and 50% of the fatal attacks give no prior warning of heart problems; 50% happen to people under the age of 65.
· One out of three Americans die of cancer.
· One out of seven or eight American women dies of breast cancer, skyrocketing from one out of twenty in 1970. Are we winning the war on cancer? I don’t think so. Just look at the facts. It’s scary.
· At least 200,000 Americans die of diabetes or related conditions.
· Close to 25 % of all Americans have high blood pressure.
· Anywhere from 61% to 85%, depending upon which source is quoted, of all Americans are overweight.
· 26% to 30% of all Americans are obese (30 pounds or more overweight) which is said to decrease life expectancy by 7 years. Even if you are overweight by 10 to 29 pounds, your life could be decreased by at least 3 years.
· 25% to 30% of our children are overweight, and many of them are obese, and that figures climbs every year. I have read that if a child is 30 pounds overweight by the time he reaches 20 years old, his life expectancy decreases by 20 years!
· At least 280,000 deaths every year are attributed to too much weight.
Yes, in spite of the U.S.’s wealth, it does not have the most important wealth of all—the wealth of health.
What are we doing wrong?
And a better question to ask yourself is: What can you do right? Right now!

The Best Fat-Burning Exercise for Couch Potatoes
If you’re a committed couch potato, it’s no good pretending you are going to get yourself to the gym five days a week starting from Monday.
As much as I would like to give you a whole gym routine to perform - a balanced blend of cardio, strength training and stretches - I know that this is too much for most people to cope with in one fell swoop.
The amount of effort involved may be so alien and overwhelming that you would not begin at all or you might very well follow the routine this week or this month then quit defeated and retire to your couch vowing never to exercise again. To go from couch potato to regular gym-goer overnight takes a will of iron (or a personal trainer on hand to keep you hard at work for every session).
Instead, I advise baby steps for couch potatoes - literally - because the very best fat burning exercise for beginners is to put one foot in front of the other - it’s walking.
You can start at any level. You can walk anywhere (even around your home). You can walk with anyone - take your dog, your partner, your kids or go it alone (as long as you keep to safe places). You need no special equipment other than your normal clothes and a comfortable pair of shoes. You don’t have to get to the gym, get changed and showered afterwards. You can fit it into your day easily even during your lunch break. Check with your doctor if there’s any doubt about your health but there are very few who would not benefit from walking.
Start with as little as 10 minutes (or even 5) a day. It doesn’t matter - everyone has to start somewhere. Make it easy for yourself to get the walking habit by starting gently then very gradually increase your distance and your speed. You’ll feel the benefit in your fitness levels very quickly as you do so.
Right from the start you’ll be burning additional calories every minute you walk and you’ll gradually reach the optimum level of exercise for fat burning too - it only takes walking at a moderate to brisk pace for 25 to 30 minutes or so to be in the right range for burning fat.
You’ll be amazed at how good a few minutes walking makes you feel about yourself if you don’t usually exercise. And it’s a very simple way to get the exercise bug. Who knows - before long you may be hankering to try the gym too!

Fraud Protection When Ordering Your Prescriptions Online
Protect Yourself From Online Fraud
Being in the online medication industry for over two years has taught us much, but one of the most important lessons we have learnt is how to tell a scam pharmacy from a real pharmacy. You must be very vigilant in determining who you trust when you order online. We suggest you take note of the following.
Do they have contact information readily available?
Would you trust your medications when they come from a company you can only ever contact through an email address? More than 90% of the online pharmacies out there do not list phone numbers or addresses and this lack of contact information says many things about the pharmacy:
1. We don’t want to talk to you and
2. We want to remain anonymous
But it doesn’t stop at the phone number, because what a lot of online pharmacies are doing nowadays is outsourcing their call center to a 3rd party whose primary job is just to take orders. This is important to take note of because when a company outsources its call center they still separate themselves from the customers and maintain their degree of anonymity. When you combine this with the fact that they can pick up and move their operation literally overnight; this is a scary thing indeed. This is not to say that all pharmacies that outsource are fraudulent, it is just something to take note of when you are doing your due-diligence.
The next piece of information you want to look for is the company’s physical mailing address. The only reason a company would not provide this piece of information is to once again hide their true identity/location and this is a very common indication of fraud.
Next time you visit a pharmacy be sure to click their “Contact” page and see what information they have available to contact them by. You may be very surprised.
Reputable Domain Name?
Take a look at the top of the Internet browser to see the website address you are visiting, does it look like a reputable domain name?
A reputable domain name is something like:
google.com
If you are visiting a site that looks something like:
amiaminifg.net/HlvCGoiogpHkzl8FaT9sOfk6G/FBouNxwSAAYDDgclCxUeTAUD.htm
Then click the back button right away. These domain names are literally there one day and gone the next. Does the above URL look like it belongs to a pharmacy that is legitimate?
Another thing to watch out for are website addresses that are not using domain names at all, but rather IP addresses such as the example below:
204.37.84.153/viagra.htm
This is not just laziness on the part of the pharmacy, this is done on purpose. By using an IP address the fraudulent website can easily move anonymously from server to server without any problem. Do you think they are notifying all their previous customers of such moves?
How did you hear about the pharmacy?
Where did you hear about the pharmacy? Obviously the best way to hear about any pharmacy is from word of mouth but when you are online that is not always the case. There are so many ways to advertise on the internet that weeding out the good from the bad may seem daunting, but is rather quite easy. The absolute worst place to hear about any pharmacy is unsolicited email (otherwise known as SPAM) and then next worst would probably be pay-per-click (where pharmacies bid on keywords that you search for), although if the pharmacy is bidding on pay-per-click through Google Ad words (google.com) or Overture (yahoo.com, msn.com, etc) then they now are required to participate in Square Trade (a licensing body that governs online pharmacies and validates their legitimacy) before they can advertise. These pharmacies are supposed to be legit, but the screening process for them are certainly not perfect and on more than one occasion we have encountered known fraudulent sites to pop up from time to time, so be careful!
Other forms of advertising are banner ads and affiliate sites and these all must be taken with a BAG of salt. To put it in perspective, those are all “paid” advertisements and there is no one verifying anything they promote. The only reason one website would advertise another website such as a pharmacy is to obtain a sort of commission in return. So if they are being paid to refer you to a pharmacy, the only thing they care about is which pharmacy will pay them the most for the referral, not which pharmacy is the most legit. Think about that next time you take another websites word for a “recommendation”.
How do you identify an affiliate site? A good way is by the URL they are sending you too. For example, if a website was going to refer you to another website they would normally do so directly as in:
website.com
However, if they are an affiliate, you are likely to see other parameters in the URL that will allow the commission to be tracked. An affiliate URL could be any of the following:
website.com/?affiliateID=12345
website.com/product/service.html?partner=12345
partner123.website.com/
Also be careful because sometimes an affiliate URL will look like the above but then quickly redirect you to the main site (without the affiliate IDs) in order to try and fool the customer. To determine if this is the case, right click on the link you want to visit, copy the link, the paste it into your address bar. This is the only way to determine EXACTLY where you are going and what incentives are awaiting the referring website if you place your order there.
How many products?
This is not the be all end all of determining if a website is a scam, but most of the scam websites we come across all seem to share the characteristic of having less than 50 or 100 products in their inventory. Make note of this when you arrive at the website, and make note of the fact that it is a lot easier (and quicker) to throw up a 50 product site than a 5000 product site.
Is there a visible Internet presence?
How long has the site you are visiting been around? Is anyone (other than obvious affiliates) talking good/bad about it? Here is a good way to see:
Go to google.com and type:
cache:www.website.com
site:www.website.com
link:www.website.com
(where www.website.com is the website you are researching)
This will give you a few key pieces of information about the site.
* When (if ever) was the last time the search engine saw this site
* How many pages of the website is in the search engine
* How many other sites are linking to it
While this information can not be strictly used to tell legitimacy of any website, it can be used to determine how long the site has been around. If the site has many indexed pages and many other legitimate websites linking to it, you know it has been around for some time. This is always a good sign, since fraudulent websites typically don’t stay around long enough to even be cached by a search engine let alone have all their pages indexed.
SSL Security
In the day and age of Internet commerce you would think that by now everyone passing personal information across the Internet would be doing so securely, but sadly that is just not the case. Whenever you are visiting a site and are at a page where they are requesting information such as your credit card, make absolute sure they have an SSL certificate (little lock at the bottom right hand corner of your browser) present, because if they do not you are just asking for trouble. The lack of this symbol means that your information is being sent over the Internet in plain text, and anyone (including your ISP) could read it without trouble. Is it really worth the risk?
Also be careful about calling in to place your order, because most call centers (especially those that are outsourced) will place the order over the exact same website you would use online (secure or not), so if you think you are more secure over the phone that is not the case. In fact, we prefer to use the Internet ourselves since you never really know who the person on the other end of the line is and what they are doing with your information after you hang up.
Tracking Information for Orders
Do the websites provide tracking numbers for their orders? Most do, but there have been a few we came across lately that were very suspicious about how they do their business. They will provide you with a tracking number, but the only way you can track the order is through their own website. They usually provide a number of falsified reasons as to why this may be, but that is beside the point. The goal of these websites are to provide you with “hope” that the order is actually in transit on the way to you. In the mean time they are waiting Visa/Mastercard to pay them the funds (there is sometimes up to a month delay from the day you pay with your credit card till the day the website owner receives their funds). Once these funds have been received they simply disappear. Of course, maybe they will put extended shipping times like 5-6 weeks to give them a little more time, but whatever the case make sure that whichever company you deal with will give you a tracking number for a service you can actually track yourself (FedEx, DHL, USPS, etc).
No charges at all
This actually happened to a few of our customers and so we decided to update this page with the information. Believe it or not, getting a merchant account (the ability to process MasterCard and Visa) is not an easy task, even for a legitimate website. Just having one is not a basis for legitimacy, but it’s a start. For those fraudulent websites that are either too lazy or incapable of acquiring such an account, they will just throw up a website and “pretend” to charge you for the order. They will then save all your credit card details (and those of a few thousands other people) to be sold/used at a later date for some other types of fraud. After you place an order with any new company online, give your bank a call 2-3 days later and see if it was charged. If it has not been charged, you may want to call the company and find out why. Some companies may just charge you when the order is about to be shipped so it is not an immediate cause for alarm, but then again, you never know unless you ask.
Subscription Fees
Probably one of the most common questions asked when people call in are “Do I pay any subscription fees to join your service?” There are quite a few sites selling subscriptions to their “service” that would allow potential customers to view lists of “legitimate” pharmacies carrying hard to find products that have been “fully verified”. So we signed up to one of these websites to see just what they would offer (after all it was only $25), and all they provided was a list of websites, nothing more, nothing less. So the next step was to verify these websites against our list of SCAM resistant methods and let’s just say we were not surprised when almost all of them failed one criteria or the other, especially the criteria of them all being affiliate related. One thing we were surprised with was the recurring monthly charge even after we cancelled the service. In fact, we had to cancel the card before those charges ended up stopping, so needless to say use these services at your own risk.
Internet Scams a thing of the past?
Not anytime soon. It seems no matter how many times these pharmacies are shut down; they just keep popping up again and again under different names with more and more ways to take your hard-earned money. As long as it remains profitable for them to do so, they will always be there. Knowing this is the first step in protecting yourself. The next step is to have the latest tools and knowledge to weed through the good from the bad, and that is what we are here to help you do. We will update this page frequently with more ways to protect yourself online so be sure to bookmark us and check back later.

Hair Restoration Procedure
Hair restoration is the surgical procedure aimed at permanently correcting male pattern baldness. It is a generic term to define a number of methods used to restore hair to balding areas. Hair restoration methods involve topical, oral and surgical treatments.
Various methods of hair restoration surgery
There are various methods of hair restoration surgery for you to choose from. The two chief methods that you can opt for are – a.) Scalp Flap Surgery and b.) Scalp Reduction Surgery.
A. Scalp flap surgery – It entails moving a flap of skin and underlying tissues from one scalp area to the other. The surgeon first cuts out a section of the scalp where there is no hair growth He then replaces it by a flap of hair-bearing scalp. The size and placement of the flap will depend on your requirements. You do not need to worry about the scar. It will be covered by the relocated hair.
The objective of this hair restoration method is used to rectify a non-traumatic cosmetic defect. It is also used to repair a traumatic injury site and restore its functionality and cosmetic appearance. Another use of scalp flap surgery is repairing a skin defect caused by congenital malformation. The advantages of this hair restoration surgery procedure include natural frontal hairline, proper hair placement in temporal areas, hair pattern distortion avoidance, etc. However, it runs the risk of certain side effects. They include permanent hair loss at donor sites, scarring at donor or recipient sites, blood supply failure to the flap, etc.
B. Scalp Reduction Surgery – Scalp reduction surgery is the hair restoration procedure usually meant for people with posterior baldness. It is into removing bald scalp and bringing the half-bearing scalp closer to it to fill in the bald area in the scalp. In this hair restoration surgery the surgeon reduces the baldness by cutting out a segment of the bald scalp skin. The hair restoration process in scalp reduction surgery has two parts. The first part includes the surgical removal of the bald portion of the scalp. The other part entails hair-bearing scalp being upwardly stretched to replace the bald scalp that has been removed. You many need the scalp reduction surgery to be conducted in combination with the surgical procedure called brow lifting. This procedure removes the frown lines from the forehead and crow’s feet from around the eyes. In your case this surgical procedure can be carried out through scalp extension or scalp expansion device. In this technique the hair-bearing scalp skin is stretched causing better coverage to bald areas of the scalp. This hair restoration surgery is often combined with hair transplantation. What’s the objective? Well, one possible objective is to “fine tune” hair restoration in your anesthetically sensitive areas. One example of such an area is your frontal hairline.
The scalp reduction surgery can be conducted before, during or after hair transplantation. The appropriate time will be identified mainly on the basis of your need. How to decide which scalp reduction technique is correct for you? That depends on various factors like your hair loss degree, laxity of the scalp, donor hair amount, etc. The possible complications and side effects that you may face include scarring at the suture lines, scalp skin “stretch back” at the excised bald area and central midline scar called slot deformity.
C. Recent advances in hair transplantation – The emergence of some relatively recent advances in hair transplantation techniques offer better surgery outcomes for pattern baldness. These new hair restoration techniques are less complicated and painful.
Follicular Unit Transplantation – At present it is considered to be the most reliable hair transplant technique. Its success rate is almost 10 per cent. A follicular unit is a physiological unit that needs to be extracted and transplanted as an intact unit. Its advantages include natural looking hair, more effective surgery due to the use of stereoscopic microscopes for dissection, avoidance of damage to the follicular unit, etc. However, it is a time consuming procedure.
Direct Hair Implant (DHI) – The minimally invasive hair transplant procedure for follicular hair transplant, DHI is free from the use of scalpel, stitches and a donor strip. The technique is based on the transportation technique named Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). FUE exemplifies the latest extraction procedure for follicular unit transplants procedure. FUE includes the use of custom-made, precise micro-surgical tools. There is direct extraction of follicular units one by one, instead of dissection. One main advantage of FUE is possibility of quality control during the transplantation procedure. Besides, it is a simple and painless procedure.
Choosing the right clinic
Be very careful while choosing your hair restoration clinic. A standard clinic will successfully help you realize your hair restoration dream. On the other hand the selection of a wrong clinic will lead to a faulty service. The various factors that determine the credibility of a clinic include the feedback of former patients, legal status (i.e. whether any lawsuits are pending against the clinic), the professional kills of the surgeon, etc.
Charles Browwn has been studying the hair restoration process for a number of years. He is associated with a number of clinics as counselor. Besides, she regularly writes columns on hairrestoration.info/follicle-unit-preservation.shtml hairrestoration.info/follicle-unit-preservation.shtml) Hair Restoration Surgery in various magazines and newspapers.
Exercise for the Diabetic
Along with medical nutritional therapy and insulin, exercise is the third component to successfully treating diabetes. Exercise, like insulin, lowers blood glucose levels, assists in maintaining normal lipid levels, and increases circulation. For most individuals, consistent and individualized exercise helps reduce the therapeutic dose of insulin.
Diabetics should be forewarned that they should never perform exercise during the time that their insulin level is at its peak. The ideal time for a diabetic to exercise is when their blood glucose level is between 100 to 200 mg/dl or about thirty to sixty minutes after meals. They should also avoid exercising when their blood glucose is above 250 mg/dl and ketones are present in the urine.
There are metabolic effects that occur with exercise that type 1 and type 2 diabetics should be aware of. In the case of type 1 diabetes, glucose control can be compromised if proper adjustments are not made in food intake or insulin administration. People with type 2 diabetes who take oral hypoglycemic medications may be at risk of post-exercise hypoglycemia.
Here are some general guidelines that may assist in regulating the glycemic response to exercise in persons with type 1 diabetes.
• Metabolic control before exercise: Avoid exercise if fasting glucose levels are greater than 250 mg/dl and ketosis is present. Eat added carbohydrates if glucose levels are less than 100 mg/dl.
• Blood glucose monitoring before and after exercise: identify when changes in insulin of food intake are necessary. Learn the blood glucose response to different exercise conditions.
• Food intake: Consume added carbohydrates as needed to avoid hypoglycemia. Carbohydrate-based foods should be readily available during and after exercise.
People with type 1 diabetes who do not have complications and are in good blood glucose control can perform all levels of exercise, including leisure activities, recreational sports, and competitive sports. To do this safely, the diabetic must posses the ability to collect self monitored blood glucose data while exercising and use this data to adjust their insulin and nutritional therapy.
Exercise can increase the risk for hypoglycemia in people with type 1 diabetes. Hypoglycemia during exercise of forty minutes or less is rare. Onset of hypoglycemia is more likely to occur after exercise, often four to ten hours after. Blood glucose levels should be monitored at one to two hour intervals after exercise to assess response to the exercise and allow for adjustments in insulin and food intake.
