10 Benefits of Having Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

There is a common misconception in the world that having Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a bad thing. While the ADD-wired brain certainly presents some challenges, it also offers some incredible benefits. The following is a list of characteristics that I consistently see in my clients, friends, and colleagues with ADD.

1. Compassion

People with ADD have a tremendous power to connect with other people. But it goes a step further than that. We also have an advanced ability to empathize with others, and to see many different perspectives.

2. Creativity

I’ve never met an ADDer who wasn’t creative! Writers, painters, musicians, film makers, designers, sculptors, comedians - the list goes on! Artistic talents are abundant. Composers Mozart and Beethoven are believed to have had ADD.

3. Drive

When an ADDer is bored with a task, completing it can seem like torture. But give an ADDer an interesting project to work on and watch out! When we want to succeed, and we have the necessary tools to do so, there is no stopping us!

4. Problem Solving Ability

ADDers thrive on solving problems and puzzles. Give us an interesting problem to solve and we won’t be able to drop it until we’ve found the solution! Important historical inventors such as Thomas Edison and Thomas Jefferson are believed to have had ADD.

5. Hyper-Focus

The ability to hyper-focus is something that ADDers can use to our advantage. When kept under control and directed towards productive tasks, like accomplishing goals and living dreams, it can be an incredible asset that allows us to get the job done, and done well!

6. Sense of Humor/Comedic Flair

Most ADDers love to laugh, and many also have a knack for making others laugh! Famous comedians such as Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams are rumored to have ADD.

7. Resiliency

There’s no denying that even though there are many great qualities that come along with ADD, there are also challenges. But ADDers have an incredible ability to bounce back from those challenges, and others’ criticism of those challenges that we’ve endured.

8. Intuition

ADDers have a sharp sense of intuition. This may be due to highly tuned levels of perception, or great insight into the human mind, or something else that we have yet to understand. Whatever the reason, it’s a very useful gift!

9. Idea Generating

ADDers are wonderful idea generators. We don’t usually like to be bothered with details, but we can come up with ideas at lightning speed! We’re a true asset in brainstorming meetings!

10. That “Special Something”

Many ADDers feel that they have a unique way of looking at the world, a perspective that others just don’t understand. That is, until the ADDer meets other people with ADD! You might say that we’re on our own wavelength!

Weight Loss Supplement - Is There a Natural Food That Can Help?

Natural weight loss

Many forms of obesity stem from an unhealthy lifestyle and diet. Many times the addition of a healthy supplement that can add essential vitamins can help regulate weight and weight loss. Many times substances marketed as weight loss supplements just add one more unhealthy product to your diet. Weight loss should be natural. Keeping the weight off should be natural too. That is why I am here to tell you that there is a natural food that can be added to your diet every day and can decrease cholesterol, help you lose weight and give you healthier hair and skin. These are the benefits of the flax seed.

What makes flax seed work?

First and foremost flax seed is high in low density fiber. That is to say that flax seed contains less calories per gram than most foods. You can eat a lot without hitting your daily calorie limit. On top of that the fiber makes you feel full longer by stabilizing blood sugar levels. Polyunsaturated fats that are provided by flax seed help with feeling full longer. These are the good fats necessary for weight loss. (These are not the fats found in french fries)

Is it easy to add to your diet?

For those that want to lose weight by adding flax seed to their diet it is quite simple. Just grind and add to any food. The simplest way to get going is to purchase a flax starter kit. With one of these you get two months worth of seed, a handheld grinder and a “How to” book that will give you recipes, diet ideas and all kinds of great tips. These kits should sell for about thirty dollars. For a new healthy diet geared towards losing weight and feeling better flax seed is what you need.

Stuck In A Workout Rut?

Ever wake up in the morning and feel like you’re stuck in a rut that you are never going to get out of? Did you ever have a day when you were SO Tired that you didn’t think you were going to make it through? A morning when the kids woke you up way too early and you couldn’t go back to sleep? We all have those days. We get up in the morning and come up with lots of reasons why we can’t work out.

Here are some popular excuses…

I’m too tired.

I don’t have time today.

I over slept, so I don’t have time.

I don’t feel like it. (Say it with a whine.)

Something unexpected happened, ie. flood in the basement, someone spilled juice
all over the floor, etc…so I don’t have time.

I’m still sore from my last workout.

I have too much to do today. I don’t have time.

I’m tired.

I feel too fat.

I just don’t have the energy.

I could probably go on, but you get the picture…Some days, we just don’t have the
desire to make the time. We are legitimately tired, busy and sometimes
overwhelmed by the things going on in our lives. If you’re sick, that’s a different
story. Then you need to rest, but you know the difference. I think that I’ve probably
used every one of those excuses myself, but I’ll tell you what. I did it anyway.

Those are the days when you have got to push yourself just a little bit harder. The
days that really count. Face it, if you don’t workout, you’re going to walk around in a
“fog” all day anyway, so you may as well see if you can work up a little sweat. If
you’re sore from a previous workout, you need to move the lactic acid out of your
muscles. It’s the only way you are going to clear your head and feel better. The way
that I look at it…anything is better than nothing.

OK, so you only have 15 minutes; it’s better than nothing! Hell, 10 minutes is better
than nothing! Get the excuses out of your head and try to focus on getting through
that workout. The first 5 minutes are the hardest. That’s when the little voice inside
of your head will tell you that “you just can’t do it!!”. Get through that, and you’ll
make it. Do some jumping jacks, push-ups, crunches, go for a walk/
run…ANYTHING!

Trust me. You will feel 100% better, you’ll have the energy that you need to get
through your day, and you won’t feel “guilty” for skipping a workout.

Now, if you’ve been in a rut and missed a few days, or you’re just thinking about
starting again after a few months or weeks off, the same principles apply. The first
and second day are the hardest. Get through those two days and it will be full steam
ahead. The key to working out and staying in shape is being consistent.

You can thank me when you’re done.

5 Ways To Get The Best Use Out Of Your Home Treadmill

The #1 fear that people have when investing in a home treadmill (or any piece of exercise equipment) is that they won’t use it.

You know the story. It gets delivered, you set it up and enjoy it for a few days…and then it sits…and waits.

A few months down the road, you notice how dusty it has become and how much space it’s taking up. And you remember how much weight you were determined to lose by using it faithfully every day. But now, unfortunately, it doubles as a clothes rack.

Never fear. This article will help you make sure that DOESN’T happen.

A treadmill provides the best overall cardiovascular workout & it’s still the number one exercise machine for those who want to lose weight. So it’s an investment in your health that will pay large dividends…if you are prepared to get the maximum benefit from it!

Here are 5 easy ways to get the BEST use from your home treadmill:

#1) Do your research first

Make sure you look at what each treadmill offers you and compare it to your unique needs.

For example, if you live in a condo and/or like things neat and clean, a folding treadmill might suit you best. If you want a folding treadmill, do you prefer a manual folding treadmill (like most folding treadmills) or do you want a shock-assisted folding treadmill with wheels on the bottom that’s easy to move?

If you like to drink water during your workout, make sure there’s a water bottle holder included in the treadmill console (it might surprise you how many treadmills do not have this feature.)

Do you get bored easily and need a challenge? What about getting a treadmill with lots of user programs or one that is iFit compatible?

These things may seem little and maybe it might cost you a bit more; but if it means you’re actually going to enjoy your workout it will be well worth it!

#2) Place the treadmill in a ‘happy’ spot.

By ‘happy’ I mean well-lit, open and stimulating. Don’t put it so you face the bare wall when you walk or run. I’ve tried this this and the workouts don’t last long! If you get bored easily, put it facing the television or facing a window where you can have an attractive view while working out.

Rooms and spaces have definite ‘feels’ to them and that will affect the success of your workouts. Make sure your treadmill is placed in an area that makes you feel energized, happy and mentally stimulated.

#3) Get your exercise arsenal ready BEFORE the treadmill arrives.

Do you like listening to fast music when you exercise? Do you like watching your favorite movies? What about reading magazines? What inspires you to work out and feel your best?

Get these things ready even before your treadmill arrives and you’ll be three-quarters of the way there. Have several workout or favorite CD’s around. Get your favorite movies or shows on tape. Gather your favorite magazines.

By having an ‘exercise’ stash around your treadmill, you’ll be inspired to workout AND you won’t be stuck running around looking for something to do when you want to start exercising.

Again, this may seem simple, but it works. Why do you think gyms have magazines, televisions and CD players handy?

#4) Make an exercise plan.

Before you start working out, try making a plan, a “roadmap to your rock-hard body” so to speak. By writing down how long and what kind of workout you’ll be doing in week 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, you’ll get yourself psyched up for success.

Remember that every time you workout, you are planting the seeds for the kind of dream body that you want.

By having a plan, you can see just how many seeds you’ve planted (and even how long it will take to start reaping the results!) Have fun with it and you’ll be motivated to achieve your health goals (and get maximum benefits from your treadmill!)

#5) Track your progress

Ok this is related to #4 but it’s more of an ongoing thing. By tracking your progress every day, you get a major sense of accomplishment which snowballs into even greater fat-burning results.

I suggest you have ‘minimum goals’ like “I’ll walk for at least 10 minutes.” or “I’ll do 5-30 second intervals.” These are easy to do and you’ll probably go beyond them - which will encourage you even further and heighten your sense of accomplishment.

And of course, you’re also getting maximum benefit from your treadmill!

Those are 5 ways to get best use from your home treadmill. Just remember that even a little bit of preparation will pay off large dividends in the long run.

Liquid Fad Diets…Why Drinking Your Way to Slimness Isn’t The Best Thing To Do!

So many people in our country are overweight that the problem has been described as an epidemic. Our modern way of living– spending lots of time driving and sitting in front of computers– coupled with the abundance of highly caloric, cheap food, has produced a nation of fatties. The problem shows no sign of abating, and individuals, rather than facing the fact that they need to discipline themselves to eat healthily and exercise, are choosing fad diets to combat the problem. A popular approach has been the liquid diet, in which dieters limit themselves to wacky concoctions such as maple syrup, cayenne, and lemon juice to “burn” fat. Other dieters waste money and compromise their health buying liquid meal replacements in an effort to drop the pounds. Let’s examine why these measures are futile.

Weight loss does occur on a liquid diet. The dieter, desperate to believe that she’s finally found the secret to losing weight, attributes her weight loss to some magical combination of ingredients. Or she believes the marketing propaganda distributed by the manufacturer of the liquid diet, which says that the product promotes weight loss because it affects hormones or metabolism, or some other nonsense. The fact is, she loses weight because she has restricted calories. When she begins the liquid diet, she’s gung-ho and has made a promise to herself that this time, she really will lose weight. So she faithfully follows the guidelines to the diet, forgoing all real food in favor of the meal replacement. Since she’s probably consuming about half the calories she needs to be healthy, she does lose some fat and water weight.

Unfortunately for her, there’s much more involved in sustained weight loss than downing chalky, pre-packaged shakes for a week or so. The liquid diets don’t provide the nutrients her body needs for long-term health and stamina. Soon she’ll feel weak and light-headed because she’s simply not taking in enough calories, nor is she ingesting the complex mix of nutrients that we all need to be healthy.

Our dieter hasn’t learned anything she needs to know to be healthy and fit and to maintain an optimum weight throughout her life. She hasn’t learned how to choose a moderate, well balanced menu that includes lean protein, complex carbohydrates, and plenty of produce. She hasn’t learned to recognize and satiate hunger with reasonably sized portions of nutritious foods. She hasn’t learned that she can occasionally indulge in treats because they taste good and are satisfying. Instead she’s taking the all-or-nothing approach which simply is not how our bodies were designed to function.

The dieter who loses weight on a liquid diet will soon miss the satisfying crunch of raw vegetables, the delightfully creamy texture of real cheese, the smoky smell of a hamburger right off the grill, and the chewiness of freshly baked bread. It won’t be long before the liquid diet will be abandoned. Sadly, since the dieter is now desperate for taste and texture, and her body is craving fiber and nutrients, she will begin to eat with a vengeance, and stuff herself with far more calories than she needs. The weight will immediately pile back on, and the dieter will be back where she started, feeling even worse about herself and her lack of willpower.

Liquid diets, like any fad diet promising quick results, do not work. They deprive the body of nutrients it needs, they foster unhealthy and unrealistic attitudes about food, and they ultimately make the problem worse. Anyone seeking to lose weight should recognize that it will take a life long commitment to healthy eating and exercising.

Fad diets are out! Learn proven and effective ways to lose weight and keep it off without deprivation or drugs. Visit fad-diet.net today and get rid of those unwanted pounds forever!

Parenting Autism – Getting Past the Embarrassment

One of the more difficult parts of parenting a child with autism, and something that can be hard to talk about, is the embarrassment you may feel about your child’s behavior. As parents, we’re not supposed to feel embarrassed about our children, yet we’re also taught that children should behave, and if they don’t, it’s probably a result of faulty parenting.

This belief system can be very disempowering, especially for a parent of a child with autism, because it’s impossible to control everything your child does. At those times when your child is acting strangely or falling apart, you can feel embarrassed or angry about the judgment you may feel from others. As a result, you may feel pressure to do something against your instincts, such as punish your child, just to save face, to look like you’re in control, or to assuage your anger.

In reality, just like the sadness issue, how you feel about others’ opinions is completely up to you. Believe it or not, you can choose to feel however you like when your child throws a tantrum in the mall. You don’t have to feel unhappy just because your child is unhappy, or because others may judge you or your child. It’s possible to empathize with your child in the situation while remaining happy and calm, or at least neutral and calm.

Next time you’re in such a situation, ask yourself this question- “Which attitude would best serve me, my child, and this situation? Happy and calm, or embarrassed and angry?” My guess is that happy and calm would be the better choice in most situations, but ultimately your mindset is up to you. You cannot be influenced by others’ opinions, your child’s feelings, or anything else, unless you decide that you can.

Now let’s turn for a moment to the person who is judging your child. This is someone who is judging a child with special needs. What exactly does that say about them? In reality, their judgment doesn’t define you or your child at all. Instead, their judgment defines them as someone who needs to judge. It has nothing to do with you or your child.

If your child could do better right now, he would. In time he will do better, no matter what’s happening at this moment. If you choose happiness instead of embarrassment, you can best support your child when he needs you most, even while he’s falling apart at the mall.

How to Choose Best Skin Care Products for Men?

On the flip side, the pollution by industries, vehicles, and household gadgets like air conditioners and refrigerators are very well known and clearly documented. This requires more medicines and sophisticated treatment methods.

The appearance of a person is of paramount importance in social life. The hype about ‘beautiful men’ and ‘beautiful women’ had enticed even normal looking persons to beautify themselves. Since our outer body covering is mere skin, skin care plays a vital role in appearance, apart from being looked at from a health point of view. Naturally, skin care products had proliferated, many of them as best skin care products for men.

The skin is affected generally by two major sources, apart from several minor causes. The harmful rays of the sun are one of the origins and the other is atmospheric pollution. Allergy is among the minor reasons for skin problems. Even though the rays of the sun are harmful, sun bathing has got its own curing effects also. Still, the skin needs some kind of protection from direct exposure to sun. Best skin care products for men are of much use in this.

Skin care products come in a wide variety to suit the needs and health conditions of individuals. Tanning lotions, creams, gels, sun blocks, sprays, moisturizers, balms, the list is endless. However, cheap products could cause many harm than being beneficial. As such, men should be careful in buying and only go for the products .

Even though most of the people buy these products on a do-it-yourself basis, it is always advisable to consult a skin specialist known as dermatologist about the usage of such products. This is chiefly to avoid further skin problems that could be caused by allergy to certain types of skin care products. This would vary from person to person. The advice of the dermatologist has to be scrupulously followed while buying the best products.

Till a few decades ago, only women went to extraordinary levels to maintain their skin glowing, blemishless and wrinkle-free. However, of late, even men had realized the importance of good skin care. Several products have been introduced exclusively due to the higher risk they face in factories and other places of hazards. The importance given to male models in catwalks of fashion parades had made even ordinary men to go in for products.

Nowadays, the products for men are available on the Internet also, apart from pharmacies. But, care should be taken while buying them on the net. Several products on the net appear very alluring due to cleverly prepared catalogues and ‘faked’ reviews, but most of them can cause many harm than being beneficial. As such, the advice of the physician should be followed while buying the products for men on the Internet.

Soy – Panacea or Poison?

Soy “stops cancer and baldness” (1)

“Soy foods can stimulate the growth of oestrogen-dependent tumours and cause thyroid problems.” (7)

“Boosting your Soy intake could reduce your risk of breast cancer.” (5)

“A British Government report concluded that there is little evidence that soy foods protect against breast cancer or any other forms of cancer. In fact, soy foods may result in an increased risk of cancer.” (8)

Confused?

This article on soy will examine the following: · History of the humble soy bean · It’s role in the Asian diet · It’s role in the western diet - where is it lurking · Critical questions regarding its safety · The guinea pigs

Soy Beginnings The soy plant was initially used as ‘green manure’ or a cover crop plowed under to enrich the soil, and it became known to the Chinese as ‘the yellow jewel’. Soy did not become human food till late in the Chou Dynasty (1134-246 BC), after the Chinese developed a process of fermentation to make it into soy paste, called miso, with the run-off liquid called soy sauce. Tofu came after miso and in Japan, and China it was rarely served as a main course except in monasteries where it was eaten with miso or fish stock. Around 1000 A.D fermented soy foods, natto and tempeh entered the food supply. Modern soy products such as soy-protein isolate and concentrate made using highly processed methods were unknown in Asia till after World War II. Furthermore neither soy milk nor infant formula is traditional in Asia. The first person to manufacture soy milk was actually an American missionary and physician Harry Miller. “Claims that soybeans have been a major part of the Asian diet for more than 3,000 years, or ‘time immemorial’ are simply not true.” (6)

Soy in the Asian diet According to a spokesman for Cancer Research UK “There’s a lot of research that countries with a high intake of soy in their diet, such as Japan, tend to have lower rates of prostate cancer and some other types, with the active ingredients in soy thought to be isoflavones.” (1). Sounds very compelling, however let’s elaborate how much soy is actually in the Japanese and Asian diet. According to the soy industry’s own figures Asians eat very little soy; around 9.3 to 36grams per day in China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and Taiwan. In comparison a cup of Tofu is 252grams, or soy milk 240 grams (6). More importantly the quality is hardly comparable, with the Asian countries generally eating their soy already fermented like miso soup, not as tofu, sausages or meat replacement foods. According to Sally Fallon from Weston A Price foundation (leading independent health group) approximately 65% of Japanese calories come from fish while in China the same percentage from Pork. So it is far from the backbone of their diet (8).

Soy in the Western diet Apart from the obvious where else is soy lurking? Research estimates that soy is present in 70% of all supermarket products and widely used in Fast Food chains. Soy is used to bulk out and bind many processed foods such as sausages, lasagne, beef burgers and chicken nuggets (food firms can then put a higher protein value on them). Even the husk is used for fibre in breads, cereals, and snacks. The big one is in vegetable oil- soy is the most consumed vegetable oil in the world and is used in margarines, salad dressings and cooking oils. Food labels simply list soy oil as vegetable oil As well as that 90% of the 200 million tonnes of soy produced annually is used to feed animals (3).

Soy and the Thyroid According to Mary Shomon editor of thyroid-info.com (9) “Soy products increase the risk of thyroid disease. And this danger is particularly great for infants on soy formula…More than 70 years of human, animal and laboratory studies show that soybeans put the thyroid at risk.” Dr. Mike Fitzpatrick, an environmental scientist and phytoestrogen researcher who has conducted in-depth studies on soy, particularly the use of soy formulas published in the New Zealand Medical journal. Dr. Fitzpatrick makes it clear that soy products can have a detrimental affect on both adults and infants. In particular, he firmly believes that soy formula manufacturers should remove the isoflavones — that part of the soy products that act as anti-thyroid agents — from their products (2) How do researchers induce thyroid cancers in laboratory animals? They use thyroid-inhibiting foods like soy in combination with thyroid boosting drugs like Synthroid. (6) How much soy can impair thyroid problems? Perhaps as little as 30 mg or less than a glass of soy milk. (4)

Soy and reproduction Here is an interesting fact. Tofu is consumed by Buddhist monks to reduce libido. Humans and animals appear to be the most vulnerable to the effects of soy estrogens prenatally, during infancy and puberty, during pregnancy and lactation – all the major phases of hormonal shifts with growth and development. How powerful can soy be to the hormone system? One landmark study showed “that as little as 45mg of isoflavines could alter the length of a premenopausal woman’s menstrual cycle.” (4) Obviously it’s harder to find a cause and effect relationship as there are many potentially triggers to hormonal imbalances and reproductive problems. However in animals this has been more thoroughly tested. According to Dr Mary Enig (world renowned lipid and hormone specialist) female pigs can only ingest it in amounts no greater than 1% during lactation phase or face developmental problems in the piglets (8).

Soy and the environment Soy was previously considered a good source of protein which attracted vegetarians looking for meat alternatives. But it’s a double whammy for environmental and health conscious vegetarians as the effect of soy farming on the environment is dramatic. It is predicted that 10,000 hectares of forest every year in Argentina (20 football fields an hour). If this continues at this rate in fives years time the country’s native forests will have disappeared. Similar scenarios are being played out in Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia all thanks to companies like the genetic engineering giant Monsanto. The World Wide Fund for Nature published a report recently calculating that 22 million hectares of forests and savannah in South America (an area the size of Great Britain) will be wiped out by 2020. Crops have also triggered soil erosion, and the widespread use of pesticides and chemicals are destroying some of the world’s most delicate habitats. (3).

Soy Business Soy is traded as an international commodity, like oil and gold. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry. “The reason there’s so much soy in America is because they [the soy industry] started to plant soy to extract the oil from it and soy oil became a very large industry. Once they had as much oil as they did in the food supply they had a lot of soy protein residue left over, and since they can’t feed it to animals, except in small amounts, they had to find another market.” (2)

Conclusion So Soy’s reputation as a health panacea is now badly blemished. It still has some supporters, but it is important to examine their background to ensure they are not just PR mouthpieces for a very powerful Soy industry. Big Soy, like big pharmaceutical, has been a powerful force shaping an attitude to nutrition and health. Given the mounting evidence that does not support Soy as a health food I believe we need to be very nervous about accepting big Soy spin as nutritional gospel.

Should A Kid Start Dieting?

The accepted connotation of the term “diet” today, is a collection of food that is meant to help a person lose weight. This diet is closely linked to the amount of calories that a person deposits in his body. The basic idea is this: if a person eats less calories than his body uses, he will become thinner; and if the body eats more calories than what his body manages to use, he will become fat.

Growing fat is so un-cool that many adults and kids would want to diet. They worry about the measurements of certain body parts but they forget about what genetics have given them. You see, not everyone has a perfect body. In fact, many artists (who study the human figure) tend to believe that the majority of the people in this world have imperfect bodies. Some are born with large frames or big bones and some are born with smaller frames. This is why a friend who is not really fat may look bigger than others simply because of his bone structure.

Adults may go on diet, but kids should avoid weight loss diets. The sole reason is that kids are still growing and developing. Certain stages of your growth will make you grow “fat” and this is normal. What kids need are a variety of foods that will supply all the needed vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates. Skipping meals and eating a lettuce-only meals would mean that you are supplying less nutrients to your body and you may get sick or your growth would be stunted. You may even develop serious conditions such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. Anorexic people cannot tolerate any food. Each time they put food in their stomach, the body reacts and vomits the food. Anorexic people are dangerously thin because they are already starving. Bulimic people, on the other hand, deliberately throw up the food they have eaten.

If you’re a kid and think that you are fat, just become more active. Join physical sports. Jog or run, instead of walking towards home or to school. What you are trying to do is to burn more calories. Okay, some kids may appear too fat that it is no longer healthy. But drastic dieting won’t help. What parents need to do is to consult a doctor. The doctor can give the proper advise on how the gain weight at a slower pace, without risking the kid’s health.

Kids should forget about weight loss diets. They should focus on becoming healthier and stronger.

Collagen Supplements - 5 Key Guidelines to Choosing a High Quality and Effective Protein Supplement

While most people have heard of collagen protein, many people are unaware of its use as an effective beautifying dietary supplement, as the mainstream media regularly presents it alongside plastic surgery, (i.e. “lip collagen,” collagen fillers, and collagen fillers). While these methods of helping to reduce your appearance of aging, people often find them invasive (who actually likes having a needle stuck in their face right?).

New internal collagen supplements are becoming available as viable options to help reduce the signs of aging, as well as work on improving your hair, skin, and nails–plus they can even help you lose weight.

But as with all health supplements, when one gains popularity, poor quality mass produced knock-offs pop out of the woodworks making the process of choosing a quality one, a much more difficult task. To make your life easier, here’s five key guidelines to find a quality collagen supplement, and avoid wasting your hard earned cash, or precious time on a product that promises much, but delivers less, or at worst, nothing at all…

Key Guideline #1: Pills or Liquid Collagen?

A number of dietary collagen supplements are available in both pill and liquid forms, and that’s the first choice you have to make. While most of the time it comes down to personal preference, liquid always provides a much higher concentration (dose) of collagen protein (or anything for that matter), and it’s easier to take than its pill kin.

Also, with liquid collagen supplements, you have the added benefit of faster and more effective absorption by the body, which means quicker and better results.

Key Guideline #2: Viscosity and Thickness of the Liquid

Liquid collagen (both Type I Collagen and Type II Collagen, which are found in dietary supplements), at room temperature liquid collagen will appear more like a semi-thick syrup than a watery mixture. If the collagen is pure (i.e. it hasn’t been cut with fillers) different batches of it (even from the same company) should vary slightly in the viscosity.

Avoid any thin or watery collagen supplements; they may say “collagen” but you’ll know different now.

Key Guideline #3: Reddish Gold or a Rich Coppery Color

Liquid collagen supplements should be reddish gold, or coppery in hue. Any variation from these color families most likely indicates the presence of outside additives to artificially color the product (usually to hide a lack of collagen content).

Worst of all, if your collagen supplement is clear, you’re mainly buying expensive water. Stick to the color palette above for quality, natural collagen protein.

Key Guideline #4: Bovine Sourced Collagen Protein

The collagen protein present in bovine sources has superior, high nitrogen amino acid ratios that outshine the gamut of chicken to fish as well as, pork, “porcine,” sources. The ratios found in this source of collagen protein are more effectively utilized by the human bodies.

Key Guideline #5: Enzymatic Hydrolization Process

Liquid collagen supplements should be hydrolyzed prior to consumption to ensure maximum absorption by the body. Hydrolization is a process whereby protein is broken down and “pre-digested” (an action usually reserved for your body’s digestive system).

There are two types of hydrolization, enzymatic (natural), and acid hydrolysis (chemical). With acid hydrolysis is used collagen protein does not break down completely, and your body has to engage in additional digestion before it can fully absorbed the supplement. When an “enzymatic” process is used, all natural enzymes, usually from fruits, break down the collagen protein so it’s ready for immediate absorption.
