The Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease is a disease that impairs the brain and causes memory loss, particularly in the elderly. What in effect happens is that nerve cells in the brain die manifesting itself with symptoms of memory loss. Nerve cells are crucial to the process of recall. Although the disease develops slowly it will eventually lead to death. Alzheimer’s disease is the 9th most common cause of death for those who are 65 years old or more. It is worth noting that the average time from diagnosis till death is approximately 8 years, although some suffers have lived for 20 years, before the disease leads to death.

Alzheimer’s disease is very common among the elderly, particularly those who are over 65 years old. 36% of those who are 85 years old or more suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. This is a substantial increase from those in their late 60’s of whom around 4% suffer from the disease.

Alzheimer’s develops slowly and the first signs of the disease are often seen as simple forgetfulness. Eventually the disease becomes noticeable through the sufferer not being able to make decisions, think clearly and begin to struggle with daily tasks we all take for granted. The most effective way to understand an manage or diagnose someone with Alzheimer’s is by looking that the disease as a series of stages. Each stage has a number of symptoms that may be presenting in a patient in that stage of the disease. Not all sufferers present with the exact same symptoms and it is not uncommon for symptoms to overlap from one stage to the next. During the early stage can be quite difficult to diagnose the disease as it is not uncommon for sufferers to present symptoms one day and then appear to be healthy the next. Let us now look at the symptoms that are associated with each stage of the disease: early, middle and late.

During the early stage of the disease, the person may be prone to forgetfulness and find it difficult to make decisions. They may have trouble accounting for recent events or interactions with others and may also become muddled as to what day or month it is. This can make shopping difficult and they will struggle to manage their money and paying bills may become something they may not be able to cope with effectively. They are also prone to losing things such as their house keys, or where they parked the car in the car-park.

In the middle stage of the disease, life becomes increasingly more difficult as unhelpful behaviours become apparent, some of which include, inappropriate sexual and violent behaviour. Some of the psychological symptoms that develop are anger, eating problems and hallucinations. They can become suspicious and paranoid. They develop a fear of bathing also and can often be heard repeating speech. As their condition worsens and they become more forgetful, they will begin to require help dressing themselves. Other daily tasks such as bathing, brushing teeth, and taking medication may be activities that they will require help with at this stage of the disease. They need constant care every day. They lose the ability to communicate and understand and may not recognize their own family. Along with this goes the ability to read and write, including the loss of coordination.

The late stage of the disease the symptoms that develop mean that they will require more help from carers as they lose the ability to communicate. They are unable to walk and smile and lose the ability to perform personal hygiene routines, and they may develop incontinence. The loss of control of their physical abilities also leads to them needing help swallowing. They are also at risk of seizures, and often lose a large amount of weight. Acne Medicine - Use of Antibiotics in Treatment of Acne

Of the different types of acne medicine that need a doctor’s prescription, antibiotics are probably the most commonly used. How they work though in the treatment of acne is not exactly clear. For example, when antibiotics are used in the treatment of an infection such as a pneumonia, their effect by killing bacteria is quickly seen. However, in acne, antibiotics may take up to two months to show any improvement. As a result, many people give up before the medicine has had time to work.

Antibiotics can be used both as topical acne medicine as well as systemic acne medicine.

When used as topical acne medicine, they do not work as well as those taken orally. This may be because they do not penetrate the skin very well. Topical antibiotics do work well in acne of mild to moderate degree. And most people prefer to apply an acne medicine than to take it by mouth. However, they have to be used even when the acne has disappeared. The acne medicine has to be withdrawn gradually to minimise the appearance of new spots.

Examples of antibiotics used in topical acne medicine include tetracycline and clindamycin. As they are alcohol-based medicines, they may sting the skin. Tetracycline also has an interesting effect in very fair-skinned people - it becomes fluorescent under ultraviolet light ! Both types of acne medicine break down after six to eight weeks and have to be replaced. It takes about two months before any benefit is obvious.

Systemic acne medicine includes oral antibiotics. Common examples include the tetracyclines and erythromycin. Teracyclines as a systemic acne medicine have been used since the 1950’s. They have been tried and tested as acne medicines. They need to be given twice a day at the beginning until a response has been achieved. A further maintenance dose is then needed for as long as necessary. It takes as long as two to three months of using one type of acne medicine before making the decision to switch if if does not work. These drugs are not well absorbed and have to be taken on empty stomachs. Perhaps the worst news of all is that in spite of taking these acne medicines twice a day for several months, the best that can be achieved is suppression of the acne. Thus, they need to be taken until the disease goes into natural remission. This may mean being on acne medicines for six to twelve months. Some may need to be on it for even longer.

Erythromycin as a systemic acne medicine is a very useful drug. It has an excellent safety record and can be used in pregnant women. Unfortunately, if it is taken for more than a week, it can cause bacteria in the gut to become resistant to the antibiotic. Using erythromycin as an acne medicine may thus render it ineffective for more serious illness.

Antibiotics are known to be very effective as acne medicine. How they work is not exactly clear. Those with troublesome acne who consult their doctor are most likely to be given antibiotics in some form for treatment of their acne.

When You Eat at the Fridge

I spent a few days at a resort in Mexico this past summer for a friend’s wedding. I’ve known her since the 2nd grade and it was a really fun time hanging out with familiar faces.

It was also hot, so very hot. I took sweating to a whole new level. During the afternoon wedding in full sun on the beach, I discovered parts of my body that I didn’t know could sweat. Toes, chins, elbows, you name it… I was drenched. Despite the intense heat, it was undoubtedly the most beautiful and moving ceremony I have ever had the privilege to witness.

It took some strategic eating to keep my sensitive body cool and comfortable. Not only in what I ate, but how I ate. I was in a different country and yet I had every type of food available to me. When you are in a contained environment, such as an all inclusive resort, with many different nationalities represented, there is food for all types of tastes and appetites. Being a naturally curious person, fascinated by other cultures, I kept my eyes peeled.

Culture Curiosity

As I walked by the all day buffet and grill, I noticed something rather special. Families, many of them, quietly and peacefully eating together. They would sit down at a table, have selected an array of fresh foods, chosen the ceramic plates, knife, fork, and a glass for their beverage. They were looking at their food, casually taking in their surroundings, eating relatively slowly and seemingly with care and attention. There was a definite appreciation of the food before them. It was subtle, but it immediately caught my eye. I always like to see what people like to eat. It is, after-all, my favorite subject.

Upon closer inspection, (that’s right, I snooped) I noticed they didn’t speak English. I heard German, Spanish, French and even Russian. Day after day, I noticed the same thing. Families, eating together peacefully and they were not American.

At first, I didn’t know why I was looking at these families. Something about them was attractive to me. Something about the way they were being and eating during their mid-day meal that seemed so pleasant. They actually seemed to be enjoying each other’s company and tasting their food. Ah! That was it!

My eyes darted from table to table with curiosity. Where were my fellow Americans? There they go! Drive by eat-n-run; grab a paper plate and fix some food to-go; take-out for pool side munching or for seascape snack. Busy! Busy! Busy!

Sometimes, I actually saw families sitting together, and oddly enough usually with one or more family members looking away, squirming in their seat or, I silently giggled, trying hard to control an energetic child running circles around their table. There was a distinct if not subtle energy in the way American families were eating their lunches and the way European families ate. A cultural lab experiment, if you will. And I found it fascinating. What IS that about?

Food American Style

Have we gotten so busy that even during vacation time, we’ve forgotten the pleasures of dining together? Do we have so much going on that we can not pay attention to what nourishes us? Are we so plum tired from every day life that we can’t be bothered? I say, bring on the Slow Food Movement and let’s sit down and hang out over delicious treats that also happens to fuel our life energy. Bring on the broccoli revolution! Vote yes for two hour lunch hours! (that IS on someone’s campaign promises, isn’t it?)

It’s not just what you eat, it’s also HOW you eat.
How you may ask? Well let’s not omit the obvious benefits of eating consciously: the pleasure and enjoyment factors. That IS nice. But did you also know…

Mindless, Frenzied, Stand-Up Feasting

A Beverly Hills plastic surgeon from the new reality show (yes, this is the quality stuff I watch) “Dr. 90210″ showed the viewing audience his daily morning routine. He takes 2 dozen, hard-boiled eggs onto his patio and proceeds to choke down each egg white, discarding the yolk. (His wife makes him eat outside due to the smell) You can see his body reflex gag and he winces as he forces himself to eat what keeps him full and trim. I nearly puked just watching this. It wasn’t pretty. Nuts I tell you!

Borrowing from the author Geneen Roth(www.geneenroth.com), “when you eat at the fridge, pull up a chair.” We could all put cameras on our refrigerators and see what we look like in our frenzied, mindless, stand-up feasts. I imagine I look like a lost little girl, when I stare into the fridge, hoping and praying I can spot some chocolate-wrap foil twinkling in the florescent glow. No such luck!

Here’s an idea: Try having ONE meal a day in peace, even if it’s just a mini-meal snack, sit down without television or reading. It may feel difficult at first. Whether alone or with someone, choose to make that meal enjoyable. Breathe… Just check yourself and see how you’re eating. Is it always on the go? Hurried? Distracted? Worried? Could our way of eating be affecting our health concerns? Yes, consider it possible. Trust me, you will crave less junk and your digestion will be much better.

Now is the perfect time to enjoy slowing down. Pull up a chair and enjoy your meals.

Reiki Initiation

Reiki is taught at various levels or degrees and initiation is something that is a part of welcoming a student or initiate into a new Level. It seems that we spent the first months and years of our children’s lives obsessing about getting them to eat enough and put weight on. Just when we start to relax we have to worry about them eating too much and keeping weight off. Are Acid Reflux And Sleep Apnea Related?

Recent evidence shows a direct link between Acid reflux and sleep apnea. Studies show that a great many people who suffer from Acid Reflux Disease or GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) report worse symptoms at night. The question still asked, though, is which came first.
Since both conditions involve an inflammation of the throat area, it is difficult to determine if one precedes the other.

In sleep apnea, the patient breathes harder because the breathing actually stops. This labored breathing may cause reflux into the esophagus. But the question can be asked in reverse as well. Does acid reflux cause sleep apnea by pooling in the esophagus and make breathing more difficult? Either way, the effects are the same and need to be addressed.

If the acid reflux is the root of sleep apnea, then it can be remedied through sleep positioning and diet therapy. Sleep positioning is where the upper body is elevated slightly to deter gastric contents from getting past the lower esophageal sphincter and into the esophagus. Basically, it’s a matter of offsetting gravity’s effect. Diet therapy means that the sufferer shouldn’t eat spicy foods right before bedtime as this helps reduce gastric activity during sleep periods. Another factor may be obesity. Diets rich in fats, grease or sugar are simply not healthy and should be adjusted.

So as you can see, this is a “chicken and egg” situation when it comes to finding out which came first with acid reflux and sleep apnea. Studies are being done in this area and the findings will be reported to the gastroenterology community on completion.

One such study done recently found a “casual” relationship between GERD and sleep apnea. This researcher is planning another, more detailed, program to actually measure the acidic content of regurgitated material into the esophagus. It may be that it isn’t just acidic content, but liquids ingested that are at the center of the problem.

Either way this goes, the result is similar. Material passes from the stomach into the esophagus, possibly up to the throat or mouth and causes obstructive sleep apnea to occur.
