One of the most popular methods for losing flab on the tummy, buttocks or even the chin is liposuction. Liposuction is the process of removing excess fat by inserting a stainless tube and pumping the fat out of the target area with the help of a vacuum.

Physicians need to find a way to utilize their skills to expand the scope of their practice. The growing demand for personal attention and service in medicine may provide opportunities for physicians who see the benefit of addressing these needs.

Don’t try and re-invent the wheel, learn from our experience, here are 6 tips that will help you successful add medical aesthetics to your practice.

1. Do It Because You Want To Do It

Adding medical aesthetic procedures is going to add another dimension to your practice. Adding a cash-based revenue center to your practice should yield great returns. However, if you are not doing what you truly enjoy, it will show on your bottom-line. As you will probably be spending more time and money than you originally planned, you need to make sure adding aesthetic medical procedures is what you really want to do.

Why are more and more physicians looking at adding these cash-based aesthetic medicine procedures? One reason is fees are much higher than those for reimbursable procedures.

2. Start with a Road Map

You should have a clear strategy of what services, procedures and products you will offer. Don’t try to be everything to everyone. Adding medical aesthetics typically combines medical and aesthetic procedures along with complementary skin care products.

One thing I strongly advocate is having a plan. You should have a business plan that outlines what you want to accomplish (goals), and a road map on how you are going to get there. You should have a marketing plan to clearly outline what you are going to do in order to get the best return on your investment (time).

A very important part of your business plan is to clearly understand what the top minimally invasive procedures are, and who is having them done.

3. Product, Equipment, Service

Before you purchase any equipment, you should know which procedures you are going to perform in your practice. Hair removal, although popular, is very commoditized. You may want to focus on vascular and pigmented lesions, skin tightening, wrinkles and acne scars, and skin rejuvenation. It is also important that your equipment can be easily upgraded as new technologies become available, and not need to be replaced.

Don’t forget about ensuring each room has sufficient space to highlight the skin care line you will also carry. When choosing your skin care products, choose the ones you really believe in. Otherwise, you are missing a huge profit opportunity.

4. Building your Dream Team

Since you will not want to be tied down to the day to day operations of the medical aesthetic portion of the practice, you may consider hiring a medical aesthetics director. This person needs to have exceptional customer service values, and be talented enough to choose and develop the right team to perform your medical aesthetics procedures.

The nice thing about offering medical aesthetic procedures is that in most States you do not have to do the actual procedures, you can hire an experienced aesthetician, RN, PA, or NP to do them. This allows that part of your practice to generate revenue whether you are there or not.

5. Marketing and Promotion

First of all you need to let all your current patients know about your new aesthetic medicine procedures, but do not think this is enough! You will need to have a comprehensive marketing plan prior to your grand opening. You may want to offer free informational sessions on popular topics (i.e. wellness) or a special promotional treatment package.

6. Don’t forget about regulatory and insurance issues

Since you will be incorporating medical procedures in your practice you need to ensure you have the proper liability coverage for the procedures you will be performing. While you may already have malpractice insurance, it may not cross-over to your medical aesthetic practice. Many insurers are now requiring offices adding or expanding cosmetic-aesthetic procedures to their practice to document clinical and/or accredited training on all non-ablative modalities before a policy of coverage will be extended. Please consult your insurance provider and your legal advisor to ensure you are accurately covered.

The underlying theme here is – Be Prepared! The key to any business success, including expanding your practice, is having clinical expertise and to be constantly cross-marketing your available medical aesthetic treatments to your regular patient base.

How Much Water To Drink

How much water to drink? With all of the to do about the health benefit of drinking water, just how much is enough to drink?

If you are looking for a guideline as to how much water to drink daily, 8-12 glasses per day is a rough estimate. But just because you aren’t thirsty doesn’t mean your body does not need water.

Your body needs a lot of water to flush out toxins but if you have more water in your body you will generally feel healthier and fitter.

You also lose water from things like through sweating, and even going to the bathroom. You need to replace this water to maintain good health so your body can function right.

Your immune system needs plenty of fresh, pure water to function right. Keeping your immune system healthy allows your body to fight off diseases and is a huge health benefit of drinking enough water.

Combating the Suppressed Immune System with Dietary Supplements

Coral Calcium – The Elixir Of Life?

Are there 200 human diseases? We don’t know; perhaps a doctor can tell. But proponents of coral calcium as human dietary supplements claim that the gifted mineral from Okinawa lagoons near Japan cures more than 200 diseases. They don’t hesitate to include miraculous cures for blinds, AIDS patients, cancers, MS; oh-what-not, to the list of diseases that will be supposedly cured in just 10 minutes.

Take a few more curative and preventive goodies of coral calcium. Coral calcium consumers don’t need hysterectomy, keep away rectal cancer; it cures migraine and so on. But is it for real? Has the world finally found an antidote to death threat? Well, hold a minute.

First, let us understand what is this coral calcium and what benefit it really brings us. Coral calcium is a type of calcium extracted from coral mined in Okinawa Island near Japan. The coral of Okinawa is said to be rich in calcium and magnesium content, which is useful as food supplement. It is also true that calcium is essential for bones and teeth, which can be sourced from anywhere including Okinawa coral reef.

Robert Barefoot and another self proclaimed doctor Carl J. Reich, who lost his license about 20 years ago in California for quackery made some outrageous claims about their magic discoveries and magic products over CFRB, a Canadian news radio. The claim went something like this: Their products, obviously made by coral calcium, had cured AIDS. And to diagnose whether someone had a disease, he used a litmus paper and the saliva of the subject, which showed whether he or she had an underlying condition (read AIDS).

Alzheimer’s, MS, rectal cancer, and so many diseases were diagnosed with litmus test and because as they claimed, we were living in an alkaline environment, humans were succumbing to the diseases.

Let see what US FDA has to say on the curative qualities of coral calcium. Let there be no doubt, FDA deals with new discoveries in unambiguous terms. It has referred to claims by many distributors and manufacturers before dealing with them individually. It has exposed the therapeutic claims of coral calcium being curative and preventive in its effect. Under section 201(p) of the Act [21 USC § 321(p)], most coral calcium sold in the market are violations, as their promotional materials project coral calcium as drug. Further FDA has no established information on safety and efficacy aspect of consuming coral calcium for curative or preventive purposes.

In addition, the Federal Trade Commission has held a marketer, Kevin Trudeau of Coral Calcium Supreme as having misled consumers by false and unsubstantiated claims. By the way, you would do good to remember that Kevin Trudeau was convicted and jailed for credit card and financial fraud sometime ago.

Finally, if Okinawans live longer than most of us, that’s a different story, which needs to be studied separately.

Recognizing Depression

Many people suffer from depression, both men and women. Some 10-15% of people suffer from it at some time in their lives. To tell you the truth, this surprises me – I would think it would be much higher. Depression has a tendency to increase with age. This may be due to social isolation, failing mental powers and physical illnesses. Women tend to suffer more so then men. But this may be due to the fact that women will open up to their doctor more so then men. Also men are more apt to handle their depression through alcohol, violence or other expression of discontent.

Symptoms of depression are feelings of sadness, hopelessness, pessimism, and a general loss of interest in life; combined with a sense of reduced emotional well-being. Symptoms vary with the severity of the illness. Main symptoms are anxiety and variable mood. Some people have fits of crying that seemingly come out of nowhere. In the more severe forms a person may suffer from the loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, loss of enjoyment in social activities, feelings of tiredness, and loss of concentration. Many will hide away in a room where they can be isolated. Many turn to a bed, where they seldom come out. They will find many excuses just to stay under the covers. Sometimes many people who say they are ill a lot, are actually depressed, and using the excuse of a sickness to be able to stay by themselves or in bed. Although they may not be sick, as in the flu, they are definitely ill – depression makes a person ache all over, and can actually cause many symptoms similar to the flu. A person’s movement can either be slowed or agitated. Severely depressed people may even think of suicide. They may have thoughts of guilt or worthlessness. In extreme cases it can cause hallucinations or delusions. Finally, the person may become totally withdrawn and spend most of their time huddled in bed.

Usually true depression has no obvious cause. Many times it will run in families, so if you suffer from depression, know that there is a higher chance that your children may suffer from it as well. So you’ll want to keep an eye out for any sign of depression, so you can catch it early and make sure they seek help.

There are three main forms of treatment for depression: Psychotherapy is most useful for those people whose personality and life experiences are the main cause of their illness. Drug treatment is used for people who have predominately physical symptoms. Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) which is given under general anesthetic is usually reserved for treating severely depressed people, especially if they are suffering from delusions or have failed to respond to treatment.

The outlook is good for must sufferers, provided they are given appropriate treatment and advice. Many may require continuous treatment and may be socially handicapped. However, spontaneous recovery is possible, even after many years of illness.

Wild Foraging: A Healthy Exercise

Every now and then I like to go on a wild food foraging adventure.
Perhaps, spend a few hours during a morning or afternoon,
roaming about the woods and fields looking for tasty treats,
or plants that can be used as foods in an emergency situation.
It’s a fun adventure and always a learning experience.

My last adventure took me into a mixed forest environment,
consisting mostly of maple, birch, spruce, pine, and the
occasional hemlock tree. This is a nice mixture and usually
occurs in soils that allow for a good variety of small plant cover
on the forest floor.

Among the first group of plants I look for, in terms of wild edibles,
are the wood sorrels (Oxalis L.). The leaves of those plants are
somewhat sour tasting, with a sweet accent. They make an
excellent addition to a salad, and are also useful for an herb
tea. Wood sorrels aren’t related to the sorrels and docks of the
genus Rumex L., although they do have a similar flavour. Both
sorrels are best enjoyed raw.

Aside from the wood sorrel, I was also able to find and taste
blue violets, Indian cucumber, and sweet fern, among other
plants.

Both the leaves and flowers of blue violet are high in vitamins A
and C. For instance, a half-cup serving of the leaves contain as
much vitamin C as approximately three average size oranges.
The flowers have been used in making jams and syrups. As
well, blue violet was considered a powerful medicine plant in
traditional British and European herbalism.

The Indian cucumber root is a wonderful treat! It should not be
collected, as it is endangered in many areas. However, if you
find a location where there are a number of plants growing, it
is okay to dig out the root from a single plant. It is a crisp
tasting, white root. The taste reminds one of potato, but also
has added flavour that resembles a cucumber. I enjoy it a
great deal.

The leaves of sweet fern may be dried or used in a green state
to make a pleasant tasting tea. I don’t think it’s a tea that
should be used on a daily basis, especially if you are taking
prescription medications. Before drinking it regularly, I would want
to research the chemical nature of the plant more fully. However,
it’s certainly a unique and pleasant tea to serve on occasion.

As I say, spending a few hours in the forest, finding wild edibles,
is an adventure and learning experience. It’s relaxing and
therapeutic to our body, mind, and spirit. It’s also a great way
to grow a friendship or relationship with another person. This is
something I hadn’t considered until quite recently, probably
because I’m only now learning to live more fully from the heart.
I wish I had started earlier for a number of reasons. But that’s
another story.

So, go for it. I challenge each of you to try at least one wild
edible; but, remember, try only a sample. Never, never, contribute
to the over-collecting or over-harvesting of wild plants.

Lose The Weight And Lose The Chest Fat

I receive emails every week from guys wanting to know
how to lose the chest fat. Not wanting to give a short answer-
but ultimately it comes down to this. Lose the weight and
lose the chest fat.

You see, when we have an area like our stomach (for some of us it’s
our chest) that holds the fat like no other place on our body, to lose it…
sometimes means it will be the last fat to leave.

Until you have the flat stomach but still have the chest fat, don’t even
consider another method… Especially the ‘miracle pills’.

Weight loss- Now this subject alone opens up one big can of worms.
Do you know how many quick-weight-loss scams are out there?
And how many more open their doors for business every week?

Oh they give the promises… They promise you’ll drop dozens of
pounds by next week- but forget to tell you how dangerous this can be…
not just physically but also mentally.

You’ll gain it back and it will bring some friends with it. Now you’re
in worst shape than before you began.

They also forget to tell you that is NOT the way to lose the chest fat
that will stay off.

Diets like that only put you on the yo-yo effect- weight off- weight on…
over and over again… If you’re like me losing weight is on my favorite’s
list- right underneath root canals… It was hard enough losing the chest
fat in the first place…

I sure didn’t want to lose the chest fat just for it to come back…
even bigger than before!

So first and foremost… concentrate on losing your entire body fat…

I know it’s hard to make that mental shift. For me- the chest fat was
always on my mind… haunting me. Why wasn’t my stomach fat bothering
me? I think it was because it was so much more normal. Accepted. Expected.

But my chest fat was causing me to stick out from the crowd (no pun
intended)… Laughter in the background. Let’s just say- the pool wasn’t
my hang out spot. Vacations? Let’s go to the mountains. Somewhere
I can keep my shirt on.

Again guys- Lose the weight- lose the chest fat.

Simple, yet not easy! Yes, there are situations where you have a physical
condition which will warrant more than just weight loss- but until you
lose the fat on your body, don’t place yourself in that category.

Four Ways to Fight Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Change your lifestyle

Most experts we have read believe that stress is an important contributor to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
If your job is stressful, you may need to find a new job – even it if pays less. After all, your health and well being should come before money if this is possible. On the other hand, money problems can be stressful, so you need to weigh the one against the other.

Stress also comes from, and we hate to say this, marriages and relationships. If your marriage or your relationship with a significant other seems like one continuous battle, you may want to make a change in this as well. However, before you do, think how stressful a divorce or break-up might be. The good news here is that these tend to be short-term stresses vs. the stress of staying in a bad relationship.

Try to rest as much as possible. If you can work and have an eight hour a day job, make sure you have as much quiet time as possible when you get home. Try lying down in a darkened room – maybe with some soft, gentle music playing or CDs of nature sounds.
Some CFS patients have reported that meditating has helped them, so this is something you might want to try.

Eat healthy

Many CFS patients have found that by just following a healthy diet they find relief from some CFS symptoms.

First, here are the things to avoid: Sugar and sweets, foods low in nutrients and high in sugar and fat, and eliminate all allergic foods.

Next, make sure you are eating raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains and unroasted nuts and seeds. Fiber helps minimize constipation, which is sometimes a factor in fatigue. Fruits, oatmeal and oat bran are especially good for CFS sufferers. Try to drink eight to 10 glasses of pure water and vegetable or fruit juices daily to flush out toxins.

Another good fatty acid that could help you with CFS is flaxseed oil. You might want to take two tablespoons a day, as well as a magnesium supplement of 400 milligrams.

Get support

If you live in a middle- to large-sized city, there almost certainly will be a CFS support group that can provide both information and mental support.

To find a support group near you, go to cdc.gov/cfs/support/supus.htm. You can then click on your state and see if there are any nearby groups.

A helpful and useful support group should include:

Both newcomers and patients who have had CFS for longer periods of time to provide a balance of perspectives for the group.
People with whom the CFS patient feels comfortable.
Leaders who empathize, gently draw out shy members, and keep others from dominating, and who distill discussion into useful information.
