Benefits of Antioxidants

To appreciate the possible benefits of antioxidants, you must first understand what an antioxidant is. An antioxidant is anything that slows down or stops oxidation, a chemical reaction involving the uptake of oxygen. For example, the rusting of iron is an oxidation process that results in oxygen being taken from the atmosphere and combined with other elements to form something new. In the context of human cells, many metabolic processes use oxygen and result in the release of new oxygen-containing molecules, such as hydrogen peroxide, that can subsequently damage cells and body tissues and cause disease. An antioxidant is anything that mops up these oxygen-containing “free radicals” and removes them before they can do any damage.

Antioxidants benefits that are being celebrated in popular culture and widely studied in scientific research are those associated with certain diseases. Free radicals are thought to play an important role in the development of heart disease, cancer, physical changes associated with aging, and other health problems. Attention is largely focused on identifying food sources of antioxidants and determining whether the benefits of antioxidants can be increased by supplements containing particular antioxidant molecules.

It turns out that anyone who has used vitamin and mineral supplements has already enjoyed antioxidants benefits without knowing anything about it - a number of the common vitamins and minerals are antioxidants and this characteristic is a large part of their demonstrated contribution to good health. Vitamins that have been particularly noted for their antioxidant properties include Vitamins A, C, and E. Zinc, selenium and calcium are some of the antioxidant minerals. Other common dietary sources of antioxidants include carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein, lycopene and others), bioflavinoids and related compounds, phenolic acids and related compounds, and various other molecules. The benefits of antioxidants can be obtained from some hormones as well.

Among the identified and suggested antioxidants benefits are protection against cancer, good eye health with prevention of degenerative eye diseases such as age related macular degeneration, protection of the central nervous system, a stronger immune system, and cardiovascular health with increased protection against heart attacks and strokes. These benefits of antioxidants, however, are obtained by including a wide range of different healthy foods in the diet, rather than by taking high doses of one or two specific antioxidants. High doses of antioxidants, in fact, may do more harm than good.

If you want to enjoy the benefits of antioxidants, the best approach is probably the traditional one: eat a healthy diet rich in plant sources and combine this with a healthy active lifestyle. If you suspect that your diet is not what it should be, you might want to add a multivitamin and mineral supplement containing moderate and safe amounts of a variety of antioxidants. Discuss particular heath problems with your doctor.

Caring For Skin Using Skin Care Cream

Age doesn’t make you less of a person. It only does if you are not taking care of your well-being and you start to abandon the realms of healthy living. For those people who are becoming stressed out by visible signs of aging, it’s never too late to start regaining that youthful look and glow.

Two of the most common complaints of people when it comes to skin is having different kinds skin disorders or having visible signs of premature aging. These are what different beauty products are for—to provide solution to people’s common skin problems.

A different kind of cream

It is only natural for people to find ways to maintain and protect their physical beauty. Since not everyone can stay as flawless as babies due to several external factors, more and more products are being uniquely developed depending on the person’s skin type and needs.

One of the most popular skin care products available in the market today is the skin care cream. Since creams are known for being easily absorbed by the skin, countless of skin care creams—mostly anti-aging—are being sold.

According to dermatologists, there are actually over 300 skin care creams and products created to solve different skin problems. Based on long-term reduction of wrinkles, instant reducing of fine lines, antioxidant protective properties that delay skin cell aging, collagen and skin renewal properties and skin smoothing properties, the most common skin care creams include Rejuvinol, Alpha Derma, Idebenol, Strixderm, Avotone, Strivectin-SD, Rejuvenex, and Hydroderm.

Although these skin care creams are known to contain high-grade chemicals and ingredients, which are uniquely formulated to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, most dermatologists still agree that proper skin care can help people maintain younger looking skin.

Here are some helpful tips in achieving that healthy skin:

1. The most basic thing you should learn in caring for your skin is to develop a good skin care regimen. Make sure that you clean your skin every day by deep cleansing it using safe cleansing products.

2. If you are using beauty products such as skin care creams, make sure that you are consistent in using or applying the product/s properly by following the instructions included.

3. Always keep your skin well hydrated by having enough liquid supply in your body by drinking lots of water or juices. Water or liquid intake should be 8 glasses or more daily.

4. If you’re a woman, make facial skin care as your top priority by removing your make-up before sleeping. This would prevent skin pore clogging and congestion. Also, keep your makeup clean by replacing sponges and brushes regularly.

5. Always keep your skin moisturized day and night to keep it from harmful elements, which damage it. Use skin care products that have high vitamin E, shea butter, squalene, and aloe vera contents.

6. Protect your skin everyday by always using sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15. This can prevent premature skin aging, wrinkles, and fine lines. Along with sunscreen, protect your skin by using sunglasses, full-brimmed hats, long sleeved blouses, and slacks.

7. If you’re smoking, quit. Giving up nicotine intake can help your skin regain its lost nutrients.

8. Reduce excessive intake of caffeinated and alcoholic drinks because they only causes dehydration which only lead to cell death.

One Is Never A Statistic

$696,000,000. Yes that’s SIX HUNDRED AND NINETY SIX MILLION DOLLARS that the Feds (this doesn’t count state and private sector expenditures) have spent on childhood obesity prevention so far this year, and the year’s only half over. At the current rate the Feds alone will spend well over a billion dollars on preventing childhood obesity, and according to the most recent Associated Press report, we’re losing the childhood obesity war on all fronts. And all this is happening right here on American soil, not in Iraq!!

The statistics, the odds, the medians, the percentages, and the averages related to this problem are growing more discouraging by the hour. The problem is so rampant that even the U.S. Surgeon General nominee, Dr. James Holsinger Jr. has recently stated that Childhood Obesity Prevention his top priority. Let me repeat, $696,000,000 so far this year and we still have no clue how to resolve the childhood obesity problem. Leave it to “the experts.”

Bad New VS Good News

But that’s the bad news. Here’s the good news. If you’re reading this sentence you’re not a pile of statistics, a median, a set of odds or averages, and neither are your kids. In fact personally I’ve never met or shaken hands with a statistic, an odd, or an average, which causes me question their validity, their legitimacy, their existence, and certainly their power over individual humans like you and I.

Strong, Resilient, Self Reliant

This essay then is intended to address real live parents, and real live educators, who have, work with, and care about real live kids, with real live challenges, and real live potential in dire need of cultivating, lest they live lives less than fully human. And if you reach them at a young enough age, there are very few of these real live kids who lack the innate talent to become strong, resilient, and self reliant human beings. In fact truth be told, there are very few who lack the tools to become geniuses of one variety or another, if those talents are properly cultivated, and developed to their full potential.

Chuck The Experts

That being the case I say TO HELL WITH THE EXPERTS, their studies, their insidious webs of statistics, odds, and averages. Since their very existence is itself questionable, I suggest that they don’t apply to you or your kids, or their friends.

They cannot prevent even one individual parent or educator from showing even one individual child how to get stronger, more resilient, and more self reliant (the only legitimate goal of education) on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. Nor can they prevent even one individual child from saying YES to, or from actively embracing those experiences that make them strong, resilient, and self reliant, happy, and fulfilled individuals.

From a philosophical standpoint, or even a religious perspective, there’s a reason why kids are born to parents instead of to school systems. Parents and kids can become a family unit and can treat one another as unique, one-of-a-kind individuals, instead of mass produced products, a pile of statistics, a set of odds or averages. So I say cough up the conventional kool-aid, eliminate the indoctrinations, forget the experts, and when it comes to obesity prevention, take responsibility for yourself and your kids. Teach them how to Pull Their Own Weight literally. After all, ONE IS NEVER A STATISTIC.

How to Get Six Pack Abs

Over the years I have seen a lot of flimsy ideas of how to get a set of six pack abs. The most common scams are special machines that will do it and sometimes some kind of drink. I remember at one point Slim Fast seemed to be showing chubby people suddenly spawning a set of six pack abs.

Anyway I wanted to put this notion to rest that there is some magic to getting a six pack. Sure there is some genetics involved in sculpting perfect abs but the two most important factors are diet and exercise.

What? Did you think there was a shortcut?

The diet part is fairly simple; you need to drop any extra fat. You have probably heard this before but there is no such thing as spot reduction when you are losing weight. You will lose weight proportionately, generally, as you lose weight. What you may find is that you have a large stomach and if that is the case of course you will lose that fat faster than you lose the fat on your legs but that is just because that is where the fat deposits will be easiest for your body to use.

As you probably know from reading other posts of mine I subscribe to the idea that people eat too many carbohydrates generally but I still do not support the Atkins diet generally. I believe that you must increase your protein to 20% of your diet, keep fats at about 20% of the calories of your diet and then have carbs as the other 60% of the calories of your diet. If you still have trouble losing you may be a bit sensitive to carbohydrates and you can up the protein a little.

As for exercise, to get a set of six pack abs you will have to do two things; get in an hour of cardio a day to increase your metabolism and start really dropping the fat and secondly make sure that you do your abdominal exercises at the start of your workouts.

For cardio exercise it does not really matter what kind of cardio exercise you get but it is always best to vary your exercise so that you do not overtrain any one muscle group. I never see people speak of this in regards to cardio training but I have found in the past with my bicycling that when I am riding a lot my legs get sore but the rest of my body recovers fine. So maybe try to alternate some kind of biking, swimming, hiking, running, brisk walking and even using a rowing machine if you have a chance. Do cardio almost every day, five or six days a week is good, seven days a week is pushing it a little too much in my eyes.

Next is the abdominal exercises themselves. There are three places to target for your abdominals, the obliques, which are on your sides, your upper abdominals and your lower abdominals. Doing abdominal exercises is something that some people believe you should do every day but I really believe you are doing well if you just do them every second day or three days a week.

For your obliques you can do twists. Simply sit on a bench with you body straight up and down and put some kind of a light bar or broomstick across your shoulders and then do twists twist from one side to the other as far as you can go for two sets of 100 reps. The key is to not use much weight at all as gaining muscle on your obliques will widen your midsection which is not something most people want to do.

To work your upper abdominals you want to do some kind of sit ups or crunches. I am more a fan of crunches as they are easier on your neck and mower back. Lie on your back with your legs up on the seat of a chair so that your legs are at a 90 degree angle to your body and then just lift your shoulders a few inches of the ground and then let them down again. This should put stress on your abs and you should feel it pretty intensely after just a few reps. be sure to do this exercise slowly and for at least three sets of 30 reps.

To work your lower abdominals you need to do something that raises your legs in the air as opposed to lifting your upper body into the air. The exercise that I prefer for this is a kind of reverse crunch that I do not have a name for. I lie flat on my back and hold something behind my head to keep my upper body stable and then I just bring my knees up towards my chest and back down to the ground again. If you get really strong this way you can try just lifting your legs straight out and up but sadly I am not that strong.

If you follow this plan you will se results very quickly and depending on how much fat you have to lose you can see rock hard abs fairly quickly. The other great thing about strengthening your abs besides looking better is the fact that strengthening your core makes you stronger overall and help out with your balance and even your stamina.

Fertility Awareness to All Women

Fertility Awareness to All Women

This article is about the fertility facts of woman.

Fertility awareness is a form of family planning. To be effective as a form of birth control, it requires women to abstain from intercourse or to use a barrier method such as male condom or female condom, cervical cap, or diaphragm during the fertile time for approximately one-third of the month. For a woman to increase her fertility awareness, she has to, most importantly, understand her body and her menstrual cycle

Here is some facts about the Menstrual Cycle. In the first half of the menstrual cycle, levels of estrogen rise and make the lining of the uterus grow and thicken. An egg (ovum) in one of the ovaries starts to mature. At about day 14 of a typical 28-day cycle, the egg leaves the ovary. This is known as ovulation.

The egg begins to travel through the fallopian tube to the uterus. Progesterone levels rise and help prepare the uterine lining for pregnancy. If a couple has intercourse before or after ovulation occurs, they can get pregnant. (Sperms can stay alive inside a woman’s body for 3-4 days, but possibly as long as 6-7 days.)

If the egg becomes fertilized by a sperm cell and attaches itself to the uterine wall, the woman becomes pregnant. If pregnancy does not occur, estrogen and progesterone levels drop, the egg is either dissolves or is absorbed into the body. The thickened lining of the uterus and extra blood are then shed through the vagina, this is known as the menstrual period.

Control Your Temper at Home While Depressed

One of the most harmful symptoms of depression is the short temper that it can leave you with. It can cause problems for you as well as your loved ones. How do you control your temper when things don’t go your way?

There are a few very easy ways. The first is to walk away. If someone is causing you to get angry, and your fuse is particularly short at that point in time, just walk away. Anger, like some depression, is situational and will go away with time. Take a little walk and remove the cause of the anger.

Another solution is to stop, take deep breaths and slowly count to ten, with odd numbers on the inhale and even numbers on the exhale. By using your body’s natural rhythm, you will be able to calm yourself because your body will focus on the breath.

Finally, be careful what you say and do. It is very easy to lose control of your emotions here, but it is important to be careful not to hurt anyone you love. By remaining calm, you can ensure that no one, including yourself will get hurt. When you are angry, you are also vulnerable, and it could lead to further depression. You need to be sure that you are careful not to make your own symptoms worse.

Mini-Facelifts Offer Baby Boomers Same-Day Results - And Cost Up To 75% Less Than A Full Facelift

“I’d been thinking about a facelift for years, but I never thought I could afford to do it,” says Jo, age 54. “Then I found out about mini-facelifts.”

Mini-facelifts are made to order for Baby Boomers who want a younger-looking face, but without the cost and downtime of a traditional facelift. Even women and men as young as their 30s are turning to mini-facelifts.

What is a mini-facelift?
A mini-facelift is an outpatient surgical procedure that rejuvenates the bottom third of the face as well as the jowls and neck. You may have heard of this procedure referred to as an S-lift, short-scar facelift, weekend facelift or quicklift or Lifestyle Lift®.

Why choose a mini-facelift?
Mini-facelifts offer:

• Same-day results

• Minimal bruising or swelling

• Up to 75% lower cost than a traditional facelift

A mini-facelift is done under local anesthesia. “My procedure took only about 45 minutes,” says Jo. “It all went so quickly — and my results were apparent that day.”

Most patients drive themselves home after the procedure, and recovery takes only 2-5 days — versus 2-3 weeks for a traditional facelift.

Is a mini-facelift right for you?
A mini-facelift is designed to treat mild to moderate drooping of the skin in the cheeks, jawline and neck. If you’re healthy, in your 30s to your 60s, and have a well-defined facial bone structure, you may be a good candidate for a mini-facelift.

However, if you have severe drooping of the neck and jowl skin, or sagging of the forehead or brow, a mini-facelift will not produce the results you want.

How is a mini-facelift performed?
You will be given a local anesthetic to numb your face. A mini-facelift begins with an S-shaped incision from the base of the sideburn, curving down and stopping at the earlobe. By contrast, a traditional facelift incision begins higher and continues around the hairline and behind the ear, ending about two inches from the mid-back of the neck.

A mini-facelift elevates the facial skin and trims away loose, excess skin, reversing the effects of jowling and sagging neck skin. Because a mini-facelift disturbs less tissue than a traditional facelift, there is considerably less bruising and swelling.

What results can you expect?
Although a mini-facelift can produce very pleasing results, it is a less-extensive procedure than a full facelift — and thus cannot be expected to achieve the same degree of lift as traditional facelift surgery.

After a mini-facelift, you can expect your face to have a smoother, more youthful look — not the “over-operated” look that people associated with facelifts years ago.

“I was at a family birthday party about a week and a half after my mini-facelift,” Jo remembers. “My dad, whom I hadn’t seen in a few months, kept looking at me and saying, ‘Something about you looks so young — but I don’t know what it is.’”

Wellness and Disease Prevention: A Look Deep Into The Human Organism

Article 2 of 7

We just read in article 1 about the very extensive biochemical makeup of the human organism, and how it relates to clinical laboratory science. Now let’s see how clinical laboratory science takes advantage of that biochemical makeup with many almost unbelievable breakthroughs and what those breakthroughs could mean to you. Some of the recent breakthroughs made in clinical laboratory science can be viewed by clicking on the link at the end of this article.

When we observe the direct relationships of enzymes to all our major organs and body functions, it gives us some idea of the enormous insight these clinical laboratory tests can provide into the function of the human organism. And, this involves not only the enzymes, but also the hormones, antibodies and the many other special proteins as well. This is an enormous amount of vital health data that needs to be fully exploited for the benefit of the public.

It was very surprising as to the amount of advanced analytical data found available during research. It was found to be very exciting because, under the right conditions, of the great potential that such developments could provide in terms of health care. When one looks closely at the availability of this very extensive and highly advanced analytical data on one hand, and the high levels of chronic disease and suffering on the other, it becomes obvious that what is needed is some means of harnessing these analytical elements and relating them directly to human health on a broad scale basis, for the purpose of reducing chronic disease and raising the level of wellness. So how can the public possibly hope to capitalize of such massive amount of such vital health related information? Obviously an electronic processing system of some sort would be required to process the data and relate it to human health and wellness.

Such a system would take clinical laboratory science to a new and different level of application. In addition to its limited use in testing a patient for a disease or lack thereof (which is primarily what clinical laboratory science is used for today) it would also be applied to individuals, on a broader scale, for the purpose of analyzing a state of wellness. Such an application would not in any way interfere with its present use on the disease level.

Basically, instead of using clinical laboratory science for one, or even several tests, to evaluate a disease condition, there would be a very broad application of highly selected blood tests, given to a person in a state of apparent wellness. This would include up to 100 separate blood tests called constituents which would be processed from one blood sample drawn from the individual (likely even more than 100 tests would eventually be used). For maximum effectiveness, the tests selected, and even the exact quantity, would be determined by the clinical laboratory scientists and other medical experts. They would carefully select the most ideal 100 blood tests for this type of application. This overall set of tests is called a profile. Once the profile is applied to an individual (or patient), that individual’s test results are referred to as a profile pattern.

If we were to use 100 tests for example, each of the 100 tests would reflect a reading at one of a number of possible output levels. For discussion purposes we will use 5 possible levels. The actual number of graduations would no doubt vary somewhat. Significantly, even though we have 100 individual bits of information, as significant as each of those special test results would be, the amount of available information is not limited to those 100 individual bits of data. This is a major consideration in the design of this type of system.

The 100 test profile pattern would be analyzed by the computers by reading the test result level of each individual test, and then relating each of those test results to one another and thus establishing a specific combination. At only 5 possible levels for each test, we end up with literally trillions of possible combinations, each of which could be significant in terms of vital health information.

But, before even the design of such a computer system is discussed, another issue needs to be discussed, the careful consideration of confidential patient information especially as it relates to the use of large computer systems. The confidentiality of medical records is of course very important to everyone—especially so in this information age—the public would not allow it to be compromised.

Great care must be exercised in avoiding any such exposures in the design of a large computer system, or even the implied threat of any such exposures. However, on the other side of the coin, it would be very sad indeed if, for whatever reason we were blocked from taking full advantage of our most powerful technology, the computer, in assisting us with our most precious asset, our health.

Fortunately, such a system can be designed to completely avoid the confidentiality issue. No confidential patient medical data would need to be either, transmitted to, or stored in, any of the large computer systems. All confidential patient data would be completely contained in the physician’s office, same as the current policy. This is a system that would provide for the full use of the supercomputer power that we do so desperately need. Computers are used for many types of applications today, as most of us are aware, this application would be taking advantage of the assimilative and correlative powers of the machine.

In addition to the above special computer processing design features to prevent the possible exposure of confidential patient data, an added feature could also be easily designed into the overall system that would greatly improve the confidentiality of medical records even stored in the doctor’s office.

The underlying the (core) strength, of the new revolutionary medical system–the best of two worlds. A new application of Clinical Laboratory Science.
