Weight Plates - Choosing Plates for Your Home Gym
Usually made of cast iron, steel, or any other heavy-duty metal, weight plates are considered as the best addition for a full range intensity exercise with barbells. With different weights available that can amount to even more than 100 pounds, they can enhance your free weight training so your muscles can become stronger and more flexible in performing other exercises.
Pick your plate
Whether it’s Olympic or standard, there are weight plates designed to fit your strength and endurance training needs. The Olympic weight plate is used for professional weightlifting competitions. These plates have holes at the center that is 2 inches in diameter so they can fit into 7-foot barbells.
If you have free weights in your home or personal gyms, then the standard plates are for you. These are made of plastic-coated or bare cast iron and the holes on their center are an inch in diameter to fit 6-foot barbells.
Buying your plates
Consider the following criteria when buying weight plates: grip and protective coating.
A lot of plates come with rubber or plastic coatings to protect the edges and preventing it from damaging the floor. Plastic plates tend to be less durable and can come off in chunks, making the weights inaccurate. Over time, the plastic can also loosen and shift over, so it is highly recommended to choose rubber-encased plates instead because they are more reliable and durable.
Choose a weight plate that you can grip firmly. Choose plates with hollow sides that serve as handles, or those that are ribbed to keep the plate from slipping. Rubber-encased plates are recommended for those with sweaty or clammy hands.

Nerve Conduction Studies: What Are They?
Asked if they’ve had nerve conduction studies previously, some patients in my neurological practice answer, “I’m not sure.”
My response: “Then you probably haven’t.” Nerve conduction studies are generally memorable. And it’s not because they’re particularly painful or otherwise unpleasant. (They’re not.) Rather, it’s because they’re completely unlike any other medical test in existence.
The uniqueness of nerve conduction studies is also their advantage. They have the ability to look at certain medical conditions from a point of view completely different from that of other tests, and can therefore discover and pinpoint problems that are invisible to other tests.
Nerve conduction studies are usually requested to help diagnose nerve and muscle disorders. They are often paired with electromyographic (EMG) studies, performed during the same testing session by the same physician and making use of the same equipment.
Nerve conduction studies evaluate the physiology and functioning of the peripheral nerves. Unlike scans or x-rays that evaluate anatomy and structure, nerve conduction studies look at the nerves’ performance.
How is this done? In a nutshell, a brief electrical pulse or shock is applied through a pair of electrode probes to the skin overlying a nerve, generating a precisely timed set of nerve-impulses. With another electrode taped to the skin over another portion of the same nerve or over a muscle connected to the nerve being studied, the physician can measure how quickly nerve-impulses travel from the point of stimulation to the point of recording.
In healthy nerves the nerve-impulses travel at a rate of 40-60 meters per second (120-180 feet per second) so that only a few thousandths of a second are required to cover a distance of several inches. In order to capture a signal traveling that fast, an oscilloscope is required.
The two most important features of the recording are the length of time required to traverse the nerve-segment in question and the size or amplitude of the resulting electrical response. Electrical responses recorded from nerves are typically 2-50 millionths of a volt in amplitude, while responses from muscles are typically 1-20 thousandths of a volt.
The body’s peripheral nerves are like telephone cables bundling together numerous individual fibers. Some of the nerve-fibers carry instructions from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles, causing them to contract. These are called motor nerve-fibers. Sensory nerve fibers, often intermixed with motor fibers in the same nerve-bundle, carry messages in the opposite direction, informing the spinal cord and brain about stimuli—such as touch, pain and temperature—generated in the skin, joints and other peripheral tissues.
By rearranging the locations of the stimulating and recording electrodes, the physician can separately measure conduction in the motor and sensory fibers even when they are intermixed in the same nerve-bundle.
Nerve conduction studies can help diagnose pinched, damaged or under-functioning nerves. One pattern of nerve impairment is called “mononeuropathy,” a term meaning “one sick nerve.” It involves dysfunction that is restricted to just a single location in a single nerve-bundle.
Carpal tunnel syndrome, in which the median nerve is pinched within the wrist, is the most common mononeuropathy in the arm, and can produce numbness, weakness or pain in the hand. Nerve conduction studies are exquisitely sensitive in detecting this condition. Another mononeuropathy in the arm involves the ulnar nerve at the portion of the elbow often called the “crazy bone.”
Nerve conduction studies can also help diagnose mononeuropathies in the legs. One such condition, in which the peroneal nerve is impaired near the knee, can cause a foot-drop. Another condition, involving the tibial nerve at the ankle, is called a tarsal tunnel syndrome, and is analogous to the carpal tunnel syndrome of the arm.
The other main pattern of nerve impairment is called “polyneuropathy,” a term meaning “many sick nerves.” In polyneuropathy there is a more widespread pattern of dysfunction instead of just at single locations. This can be seen in people with diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption and a number of other medical conditions. Nerve conduction studies are adept at identifying this category of nerve impairment as well.
As is the case with every other medical test, nerve conduction studies are not perfect. The diagnosing physician considers the strengths and weaknesses of this form of testing along with other clinical information in order to arrive at an accurate diagnosis.

Bad Breath Can Usually Be Cured
Bad breath can usually be cured. Bad breath can be caused by food rotting in the mouth, stomach acid regurgitating up to the mouth and infections releasing chemicals that smell. Your doctor should look for white dots on your tonsils, that are often pieces of food that your saliva has turned white. You can remove them by gargling after every meal or by rubbing a Q tip against your tonsils.
If you have belching and burning in your chest or abdomen, you may have acid backing up from your stomach. Your doctor can order a blood test for helicobacter, the germ that causes stomach ulcers. If it is positive, you can often be cured by taking antibiotics (metronidazole or clarithromycin with omeperazole) for one week. Even if the tests are negative, I usually give my patients with symptoms of stomach distress a trial with this treatment.
Another cause is an infection in your mouth, teeth, gums, throat or esophagus. Your dentist should look for an infection and order a throat culture. If it grows out bacteria that cause disease, your doctor can cure you by prescribing the appropriate antibiotic. However, more than 30 percent of the time, the cultures do not grow out a bad germ, and you still should be treated with antibiotics. There are so many different germs in your mouth that it is impossible to tell whether a germ that is found there is causing the odor or is a normal inhabitant of your mouth. A pilocarpine pill before each meal and chewing gum can increase saliva and help wash down food before it is fermented in your mouth. Check with your doctor.

Botox Cosmetic: What You Need to Know
Botox has become one of the most popular treatments for reducing
wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet. In addition Botox has
been found to be effective in treating migraine headaches,
excessive sweating, and muscle spasms in the neck.
Botox has soared in popularity in recent years and last year botox
injections were given to over 2 million Americans.
Botox is the short name for something called botulinum toxin.
Botulinum Toxin Type A is a protein produced by the bacterium
Clostridium botulinum.
When used in medical settings as an
injectable form of sterile, purified botulinum toxin (Botox),
small doses of the toxin are injected into the affected muscles
and block the release of the chemical acetylcholine that would
otherwise signal the muscle to contract. The toxin thus
paralyzes or weakens the injected muscle.
Doctors use a very
small dose of this toxin to help smooth wrinkles, creases in the
forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes, and frown lines. Botox
was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in
1989 for the treatement of double vision and uncontolled eyelid
spasms. Botox has been been called today’s “fountain of youth” since it was approved by
the FDA in 2002 for the reduction of frown lines.
The injections
typically last for 3 to 4 months and then have to be repeated.
The most common adverse events following injection of Botox are
headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, blepharoptosis
(droopy eyelids) and nausea. Less frequent adverse reactions
(less than 3% of patients) include pain in the face, redness at
the injection site and muscle weakness. These reactions are
generally temporary, but could last several months.
Because Botox is a prescription drug, it must be used carefully
under medical supervision. Botox “parties” may diminish the
seriousness of the procedure and if alcohol is served at these
parties it may worsen any bruising at the injection site. The
FDA has issued warning statements about botox “parties” and
recommends that botox injections be performed in a controlled
medical environment that is equipped to handle an emergency
situation.

Are Medical Intuition Classes, Workshops & Seminars for You?
Medical intuition classes, workshops, and seminars are becoming more popular as traditional medicine blends with complementary alternative medicine and other holistic practices. Their lessons are the alternative healing courses of the future creating the new integrated medicine that will provide each patient choices to create his wellness from all healing modalities.
Medical intuition is a concept created by Carolyn Myss and is the science of reading an individual’s bio energy field which is the energy that emanates from your physical body and your mental, emotional and spiritual subtle energy systems.
During a medical intuitive assessment, the intuitive examines information from your energy field. Your energy field is the historical library of your life containing all the information of what has occurred in and to your body since birth. This is called your energetic and cellular blueprint. Some medical intuitives can actually see your cellular structures and organs as I do, and others perceive your conditions, issues and imbalances by intuitive formulations derived from the data stored in your energy field/blueprint.
By accessing your energy patterns the medical intuitive provides valuable insight by identifying your issues that need to be addressed (whether physical, emotional, mental or spiritual) to facilitate your healing. By addressing these conditions with your mind in addition to physical and allopathic medicine’s treatment and procedures, one can create a true mind body connection to create your well-being on all levels.
Typical practical tools taught in medical intuitive courses include:
· Protection of the intuitive’s sensitivity and empathy
· Techniques to detect disorders/ imbalances in a client’s energy fields by: hearing, seeing,
feeling and sensing
· Anatomy of the body and energy
· How to amplify your natural attributes
· Legalities of alternative medicine
· Business credibility in integrated medicine
Although training facilities and educational programs teach medical intuition classes and provide certifications and other degrees, a true medical intuitive is certified by client confirmations of authentic assessments and their client results.
Many medical intuitive students aspire to replicate the gifts of their instructors and this rarely occurs as we are each imbued with particular powers indigenous to an individual’s energy frequencies and inherent talents. Although teachers provide various tools and techniques to activate and amplify their student’s natural abilities and gifts, most pupils learn repeatable measurable processing assessment intuitive abilities in order to earn their certification, and learn a heightened and expanded use of their inherent talents.
If you feel naturally drawn to learn about medical intuition, you probably have a natural affinity to intuitive assessments. Do not allow the requirements of having a certification by an established institution deter you from using your God given gifts. Start slowly with your friends. Read all literature that resonates with you. Find a mentor who tutors. Build a credible reading reputation base individual by individual. If you have a natural gift, your intuitive conclusions will produce evidence based results. You will then be progressing on your soul’s path by actually doing your work under a practitioner’s supervision, rather than just processing educational information in a classroom. At that point in time, you’re on your way to fulfilling your soul’s contract.

Baby Boomers Weight Loss Over 40
This is for you Baby Boomers. Some of you might feel like you are on the downside of life so why care? Maybe you are married and the kids are all grown up living on their own. So why bother with weight loss or physical fitness at this point in your life. Let’s see if we can break it down for a better understanding of why?
1. This could be the best time in your life. Your chance to enjoy things that you could not because of raising your family or building your career. This is the time in your life you should have the resources and time to live your dreams. No responsibilities to anything but living every day and enjoying your life.
2. If you are lucky enough to have grand kids you will want to take part in their lives. To go on a bike ride through a beautiful Forest or along a beach bike path. To be able to share those moments with the grand kids will give them memories for the rest of their lives. Every time they take a bike ride ,they will remember you and those adventures you gave them.
3. Do you have the feeling of doing something to push yourself to new heights. Maybe ride a bike across the country, hike through one this country’s great national parks, sail around the world, or just get back into an athletic activity you did in your youth.
4. Maybe you just want a better quality of life to live. To stop taking all those medicines that comes with getting older… being out of shape…overweight. How many aches and pains could you lose if you start eating healthy and exercising. No high blood pressure, low Cholesterol, and reduce chances of a heart attack or stroke. Not to mention the stress level low to zero about your health.
The choice is yours to make, a life of doctor visits, taking pills, and the stress of worrying about is this my last day. Or do you look to the future with your dreams coming true every day. Enjoying every minute of every day for the rest of your life. There are two stories left to be told about your life which will be told. The first one is my life was a struggle each day and you justify it by saying pain lets you know you are still alive. The second one is I so many things to be thankful for and I could not have live my life any fuller.
If weight loss is holding you back in life, make something happen today. You have to take action. No one else can do it for you. Wrap you mind around the idea of living life the highest level you can. Start a program that works for you and stick with it. Get some motivational programs to help create that mindset you need to be successful at anything. Each human body is different. One diet plan may not work as well for you as for someone else. So you will have to do some research, testing, and maybe combine different parts of more than one diet plan. When you find one that works, then work the plan to reach your goals.
Exercise works every time it is used, period. So making excuses not to do them it just plain BULL_ _ _ _. You need to do three types of exercises.
1. Cardio: Which needs to done 45 minutes every other day.
2. Weights and Resistant training: Do this on the off days.
3. Stretching or Yoga: This could be alternated with Weights and Resistant training.
Drink lots of water and do not over do it. If you have not workout in a long time take it slow. You should build up your level of conditioning and endurance. If you have pain stop. Your workouts should be fun and done nice and easy. You will know when you be ready to go for it and that will the best feeling you will every have in your workout program.

Discover How To Lower Cholesterol by Diet
While it is possible to lower cholesterol by diet the results will vary depending on whether higher cholesterol results from the diet or from other sources. It is important to note that the body produces enough cholesterol to fulfill its needs. If the over abundance of cholesterol results from poor dietary habits, then changing the diet will result in a lowering of about ten percent. The results will be less if the daily diet is not the main reason for a high cholesterol count.
Dietary Changes.
To lower cholesterol by diet serious changes must be made in the daily intake of food. Strict attention should be paid to foods high in fat. Special consideration should also be paid to foods containing hydrogenated oils. Hydrogenated oils have been found to contain high concentrations of trans fats. Trans fats have been shown to be detrimental to cardiovascular health and have been linked to actually lowering the levels of good cholesterol found naturally in the blood stream.
When making changes to the daily diet remember fatty foods do have nutritional value however minimal and should be ingested in small amounts. Variety is the key to any diet; variety will keep the diet new and interesting. Boredom is the chief enemy in adhering to any diet.
Exercise.
To address other possible causes of a higher cholesterol count, some form of aerobic exercise program should also be considered. In some cases raising the metabolism by regular exercise will also help to lower cholesterol. Twenty to thirty minutes of aerobic exercise three times per week has been shown to be more than adequate for maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. Aerobic exercise does not have to be a chore; it could be a simple as taking a walk or riding a bike. To lower cholesterol by diet and exercise is quite effective; however, there is one more weapon in the arsenal that is also extremely helpful.
Herbal Supplements.
The use and study of herbal supplements is thousands of years old. Some herbal supplements have even been shown to be as effective as or more effective than commonly prescribed statin drugs. It is important to note that herbal supplements are not strictly regulated. This means that special attention must be paid to the label as some herbal supplements also contain man made chemicals which may or may not be beneficial to the human body. Only the highest quality natural ingredients should be present in any prospective herbal supplements. A good place to begin the search would be with the herbal supplements produced in pristine New Zealand.

Get Rid Of Man Boobs - Is It Even Possible?
Many men suffer from what is commonly known as male Boobs and medically known as Gynecomastia. This is in fact a cosmetic condition in which the male chest area appears bloated, sometimes to the point of looking feminine. This is a source of great discomfort to these men as their appearance and attractability in the eyes of women is shattered.
The saddest thing is that many men feel that they are destined to forever walk with their man boobs and that there is nothing they can do about it. This usually occurs after a period of time in which these men tried to get rid of their man boobs with common chest exercises like push-ups and chest presses. While these exercises may indeed bring a certain improvement to the condition of man boobs, they can’t get rid of them entirely.
But these men have despaired for no reason and that’s a real shame. The truth is that there are a number of options for men with man boobs who wish to get rid of them. These options are divided into 3 kinds:
1. Special diet and fitness programs designed to burn off the amount of excessive chest fat a male has and thereby to eliminate his man boobs. While these programs demand a commitment from the user to do necessary exercises and to adhere to a diet, many men have reported excellent results with them.
2. Male breast reduction surgery - This is a plastic surgery in which the excessive chest fat is removed from and the chest is reshaped. The things you need to consider before undergoing surgery is the high cost and the many risks involved.
3. Man boobs reduction pills - These pills target the excessive fatty cells in the chest area and reduce them in both size and quantity. The most prominent pill on the market today is called Gynexin which has been reported to have great results in 90% of cases and which has no reported side effects.
Whatever path you choose, be aware that you can get rid of your man boobs. Remember that you need to make a commitment to yourself in order for this to succeed.

Exercise The Right Way - The Barbell Bent-Over Row
Other articles in this series looked at a number of exercises, mainly from the perspective of developing a comprehensive muscle building program. Sometimes we take things for granted, especially when it comes to performing the basic exercises that constitute the core of most bodybuiders’ training regimes.
It is useful, therefore, to describe in detail the processes involved in actually doing these exercises. This will help beginners to start out using the correct techniques before moving on to potentially more dangerous heavy weights. If it also helps more experienced lifters to redress some of the little faults that have almost imperceptibly crept in over the years, all the better.
In this article we’ll take a close look at the bent-over row using a barbell.
MUSCLES TARGETED: latissimus dorsi, teres major, middle trapezius, rhomboids
PREPARATION
Grasp the bar with a closed, pronated grip.
Grip should be slightly wider than shoulder width.
STARTING POSITION
Adopt a shoulder width stance with knees slightly flexed.
Flex the torso forward so that it is not quite parallel to the floor.
Make sure the back remains straight.
Look to a point just ahead of the feet.
Let the bar hang with the arms fully extended.
This is the starting point for all repetitions.
UPWARD MOVEMENT
Pull the bar up towards the lower chest.
Point the elbows up.
Keep the torso rigid, back flat and knees slightly flexed.
Touch the bar to the chest in one smooth movement.
DOWNWARD MOVEMENT
Let the elbows slowly extend back to the beginning position.
Keep the torso and knees in the same position.
Repeat or finish set.

Losing Abdominal Fat The Easy Way
The single most important fact that you should know about losing abdominal fat is that there is no magical formula that can make your abdominal fat vanish in a jiffy. Losing abdominal fat permanently requires patience and commitment to some basic tips. But do not lose heart. It is a feat anyone can accomplish the easy way if one understands the reasons why abdominal fat develops and why it seems so frustratingly resistant to all those exercise or diet plans you have tried out but given up too soon to see results.
The first thing you must understand is that there is no physical exercise that can reduce fat from a specific part of the body. When you burn fat for energy, as during an aerobic activity, fat loss will occur systemically, i.e., from all over the body. But since fat distribution naturally varies from person to person, depending on inherited genetic factors, some people will tend to lose abdominal fat faster while others may lose fat at say hips or thighs faster. So do not compare your abdominal fat loss graph with others.
Another thing, doing countless sit-ups and leg-raises or slogging out day in and day out on the latest abs equipment without paying heed to your diet and an aerobic activity is not going to make your abdominal fat go away. What these exercises do is to shape up and tone your abdominal muscles, but do nothing to metabolize away the layers of fat covering them. That is why the shaped and toned muscles remain elusive to the eye.
There is one and only one way of losing abdominal fat the easy way, and that is with the combination of a balanced and nutritive diet, aerobic activity, and strengthening exercises for abdominal and other muscles. The best kind of workout to burn the layers of abdominal fat along with overall fat comprises a cardiovascular or aerobic exercise like brisk walking, jogging, cycling, dancing, swimming or stair climbing, combined with abdominal exercises like crunches and hip lifts, and also weight training for other muscle groups. Weight training increases your lean muscle mass and hence your metabolic rate, implying that you burn more fat even while resting.
Glycogen (stored carbohydrates) is the primary fuel source during the first 10 minutes of an aerobic exercise. Substantial fat burning starts only after stored glycogen is depleted. Hence, the key to fat loss is working out at moderate intensity continuously for about 45–60 minutes. However, this comprises only 50% of the abdominal fat loss plan. The remaining 50% contribution comes from diet control. Abdominal exercises will help strengthen the muscles and give definition to the reducing midsection.
However, if your calorie intake is higher than your calorie expenditure, you are bound to put on abdominal fat as well as general body fat regardless of how diligently you work out and how many abdominal crunches you do – it is simple mathematics in action. Ideally, spread your calorie intake into five small meals a day instead of 2 or 3 big ones. Include a variety of foods that are rich in fiber and low in fat and sugar, with about 55% of the calories coming from carbohydrates, 30% from protein, and 15% from fat. Avoid carbohydrates late in the evening.
Remember, when it comes to losing abdominal fat, you have to adopt a holistic, whole-body approach – there are absolutely no shortcuts. A surgical shortcut like liposuction also becomes meaningless if you are not going to control to your diet, because removing fat cells from the abdomen by liposuction will lead to excess fat storage elsewhere – perhaps under the chin or on knees or shoulders – where it may look even worse than at the abdomen.
Lastly, here is a fact that is not exactly what you would want to hear: even if you are on a holistic exercise-cum-diet fat loss plan, abdominal fat is most likely going to be the last fat to leave your body.
