Lifetime bodybuilder and fitness coach, Tom Venuto created quite a stir recently when he released his ebook, Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle. Whether you haven’t heard of it or you have and you’re just on the fence about buying it, here’s how this book stacks up to the others.
Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle actually places more emphasis on dieting, rather than exercise, although hard-core fitness people will combine it with a full workout plan. This book shows you how to seriously trim down your body fat levels (down to single digit percentages) through just eating right.
It teaches additional tactics that show how to lose the fat permanently, rather than struggle with yo-yo dieting.
A fair book to compare Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle to , I think, is Bill Philips’ Body for Life because this is another main-stream weight loss and fitness book that focuses more on the dieting aspect. I bought into the Body for Life craze back in 2002 or so as well, and found the nutrition info to be VERY sketchy. This was confirmed by many others I spoke to about it as well. This is one of the first dieting books to hit the mass market that covered the new approach of “Eat smaller meals a day, more often.” But as you’ll learn in Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle, there is more to it than that.
In Body for Life, the author recommends that you drink 3 of his expensive aspartame-based milkshakes a day, combined with meals. He sells them on his website, which is printed on EVERY page of the book. He also mocks you in his book by writing “You don’t necessarily need my shakes, especially if you have time to cook 6 nutritious meals a day” as if you can’t do that. Philips’ promotes supplements as well, which get pretty expensive on his site.
Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle is a completely all-natural plan, period. There are no supplements (actually, Venuto doesn’t recommend any, and explains why 97% are junk) or proprietary milkshakes to order. He tells you where to go in your grocery store, and that’s all the product-pushing you get.
He explains his detailed, but easy to follow meal timing program, that you won’t see anywhere else that kick-starts your metabolism a lot better than the smiling face, bookstore cover guys do.
Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle talks about how to amplify the results of your cardio workouts. I read this over and cannot say I’ve seen this before in any other diet book.
He mentions the 12 best foods you should always eat, at any time, and the worst foods you should never touch. So if I had to choose, the clear answer is Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle, and compared to the hype of the mainstream diet and fitness books that don’t really tell you anything, I’d have to say Tom Venuto’s book wins out hands-down. The Emotional Impact of Diabetes
Unless someone is diabetic, or very close to someone who is, they do not realize how life changing this disease can be. I believe one of the reasons this is, is because so many people are diagnosed with diabetes; that somewhere down the line, the seriousness of the disease, in people’s minds, have diminished.
Diabetes is a very serious and scary chronic illness. It is totally life changing for those diagnosed. Eating becomes literally a matter of life and death. And the way a person is use to eating is usually changed drastically.
The emotional stress one goes through seems to get ignored and lost in the endless information and directions of how to now live your life. This is not just merely staying alive – it’s trying to stay alive without ending up blind, on kidney dialysis, with severe nerve damage, or amputation, just to name a few.
My life was drastically affected by diabetes twelve years ago when my son, who is now 23, was just eleven years old, and diagnosed with juvenile diabetes.
He has always been hyperactive, so even when he was sick, he was active. I started to notice he was looking a little pale and losing weight, even though he ate constantly. I made him a doctor appointment for the next opening, which wasn’t until a month away. All of a sudden he started wetting the bed. The urine had a very strong odor. He also started complaining of headaches. At first I thought the complaints, was just an excuse for the eleven-year-old to stay out of school. But when they became so severe, I knew they were real. The second day his headaches were so severe, he stayed home from school. He presented no other symptoms, but he slept all day long. This was enough to definitely make me realize something was extremely wrong. I got out my diagnosis health encyclopedia books and after a few hours, I came down to two diagnosis, kidney trouble or diabetes, (this was before I became a nurse, so I was going only by his symptoms and the words on the page). It was about 6:30 at night, when I told my husband something was terribly wrong and I was taking our son to the emergency room.
When we arrived at the emergency room, my son had a hard time keeping his eyes opened. We were finally called to the back, where they started running several tests. Sure enough he was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes. His blood sugar was well over 600. Normal blood sugar levels range from 90-110. The reason he was sleeping so much was because he was trying to slip into a diabetic coma. The doctor said that if I didn’t bring him in when I did, he would have went into a coma that night. They admitted him to ICU and kept a vigil on him for three days as insulin was delivered through IV. That was the day our lives changed forever; especially my eleven-year-old son’s.
It was over-whelming. Three main meals a day and three snacks a day; mandatory, with a minimum of two shots daily for the rest of his life. To say we were under stress, would be putting it mildly. My son put on a brave face, but about the fourth day after he was diagnosed, I had a heart to heart with him. The poor baby thought he had brought the diabetes on himself and was being punished for something he said. Meanwhile, my nine-year-old at home was going through her own personal hell. After speaking to her, I found out she was scared to death that he was going to die, and that she was next. This came from two children whose parents did talk to them and tried to explain everything to the best of their ability.
Our lives became rigid, at first — as we tried to cope with the changes. My son, Eddie, could not just run off and play at his friend’s house whenever he wanted, or was allowed. He had to make sure he was home to take his shots on time, to eat the regular meals and the snacks in-between. He was a hard player, he had to learn that if he didn’t eat like he was supposed to, wheather he was hungry or not, he would end up getting shaky. If he did not get something in him quickly to raise his blood sugar, he may slip so low that an ambulance would have to be called to save his life, if I wasn’t there with an emergency glucagon (intra-muscular sugar water) shot — as he would get extremely lethargic and not be able to communicate, or to understand what was going on around him.
All these changes he was going through, made him feel like he was different than the other children. He was afraid to spend a night for quite some time after being diagnosed; because if his sugar went up too high at night, it could cause him to wet the bed. Something that an eleven-year-old would be horrified to do in front of his friends. We also had to make sure if he did go spend the night with a friend, that they had plenty of food. (Though, his back pack would be packed with extra food for snacks, it couldn’t contain the main meals.) We also had to let the parents know he was diabetic, where they could keep an extra eye out. This would sometimes turn into a nightmare, as Eddie did not want to go around announcing he was diabetic. He also didn’t like being treated differently if a mother was handing out sugared drinks or sugared snacks to the other kids.
As a mother, seeing him go through all of this, tore my heart out. When I did let him leave, I had to worry not only what every mother worries about when her children go off by themselves, but I had to worry if his sugar dropped too low, would he be able to make it home {b}in time{/b} to get something to eat? Even though he carried emergency glucose pills for low sugar, it does not work all the time. (Depending on how low his sugar is and if he is able to chew, and has enough sense to take them.) When your sugar drops extremely low, you are not aware of what you’re doing. Many people have been suspected of being high on drugs, when it is their sugar causing the strange behaviour. It’s a very scary thing to see, even more so do go through. I also had to worry if he would go off and drink sugar drinks and go to the store and get candy. This was not a simple concern, this could actually kill or disable him. When your sugar gets too high, you are damaging your organs — and if you start spilling ketones, it becomes a very dangerous situation. It causes ketoacidosis which causes nausea, sometimes severe with projectile vomiting, stomach pains, confusion and drowsiness; because their body is over-worked and worn out. It’s literally starving to death. They are also in danger of slipping into a diabetic coma. High sugar often does develop into Diabetic ketoacidosis — (DKA) which is a life-threatening blood chemical (electrolyte) imbalance that develops in a person with diabetes when the cells do not get the sugar (glucose) they need for energy. As a result, the body breaks down fat instead of glucose and produces and releases substances called ketones into the bloodstream. Severe diabetic ketoacidosis can cause difficulty breathing, brain swelling (cerebral edema), coma, or death. This is also the time when diabetes is doing the most harm to all the organs — which can lead to heart failure, kidney failure, blindness, neuropathy — and the list goes on.
Eddie, who is now 23, has kept his sugar under good control, (not tight, sadly — but good) where he has not had to be hospitalized too often. He mainly has to go into the hospital when he gets a bad illness, such as the flu or stomach virus. When a diabetic’s body is stressed with illnesses, it causes the blood sugar to go erratic. High blood sugars read off the chart, even when they have not been able to eat — then their blood sugar may suddenly drop to a dangerous low. It also makes it more difficult to control because they are not able to eat, or maybe even drink. For diabetics, this is not an option. They are hospitalized where they can receive I.V fluids, and keep a close check on their blood sugar readings. Which sometimes means being pricked in the fingers up to 8 times a day, for several days in a row.
Diabetes causes such a wide array of secondary illnesses. Including stunting growth in a growing child. Eddie lost a whole year of growing. When he was 13, he had the bones of an 11 1/2 yr. old. He was put on intra-muscular testoterone shots at home. Which he took a lot better than most adults would, every night for six months.
It hurts me now, as it has since the day he was diagnosed, to know that he may soon be experiencing some very bad health problems because of the diabetes. Problems start to arise mostly after being diabetic for five years. We are living on borrowed time with decent health — as he now has had diabetes for twelve years. When he says his chest hurts him, I don’t think, “Oh no, he may be getting bronchitis.” I think, “Oh Lord, please let it be something as simple as bronchitis.” When he tells me his feet hurt and his whole body aches — I know it may be a sign of neuropathy. At 23 he experiences pains and aches no young adult should have to face. But I praise God for each day that goes by where he is still able to work and live life as close to a young adult as he possibly can. God has spared us from him having any serious conditions. I know that may change any day, but I can relish in each day it does not.
Then there are the emotional changes diabetes puts them through. The anger, restlessness, nervousness, inpatience — imagine it, and it is effected. It plays roulette with their hormones, causing their emotions and temperment to go into extreme modes. Sadly, this seems to be most of the time. All this happens in all diabetics, but I am concentrating on Type 1, Juvenile Diabetes. Type 1, Juvenile on-set, varies from Type 2, adult on-set, because with type 1, your pancreas does not produce any insulin at all. With Type 2, it produces insulin, but not sufficient enough, or at a normal rate.
These emotional issues are just as important to deal with as the physical disease itself. The emotional needs must be addressed. Not only the needs of the person diagnosed, but the whole family, and if it’s a child, this includes the parents and siblings.
If you are living with diabetes, please make sure you get the emotional help you so need and deserve. It’s absolutely a necessity. You may have to live with diabetes, but make sure you have it under control, and that it does not control you. After all, it’s a matter of life and death – both physical and emotional.

Ana-Mia and the Mature Woman
I’m sure most women have heard the saying, ‘ You can never be too rich, or too thin’. I won’t comment on whether or not you can be too rich, but I do have some words on the too thin part of the statement.
‘Ana-Mia’, refers to Anorexia, and Bulimia, two of the most widespread eating disorders affecting our society. We constantly hear about teenage girls succumbing to these disorders. Our girls grow toward maturity, and find their bodies changing, developing toward womanhood, and there everywhere, are the images of ad models, female celebrities, with bodies starved, with waist, hips, legs, bearing a resemblance to those of a child. Our girls are being taught they should strive to retain, at all costs, their ‘little girl’ bodies. They are being infused with fear, at an early age, of not fitting in, not looking like the model of acceptable feminine beauty, set forth by a sick society.
What we do not hear about is the problem of more mature women, falling victim. As usual, the mature segment of our society has been overlooked, as far as research concerning yet another health issue for women. Yet, from my own personal research, I’ve discovered it is definitely a serious problem.
At a time in life, when it is so important for women to maintain a healthy diet, many mature women choose to follow rigid weight-loss plans, bordering on self-starvation. Often they adopt strenuous exercise regimens as well, in an attempt to either lose weight, or keep it off, or to achieve an unrealistic ‘perfection’, as to their body. A hoped for return to the body they possessed, ten, twenty, thirty, years ago.
There is no one cause associated with developing an eating disorder. Psychological factors are often mentioned as triggers, such as a dysfunctional family or relationship, or individual personality traits, such as a penchant for perfection. Emotional negativity, traumas such as rape, abuse, or the death of a loved one can result in triggering these disorders. Most women with eating disorders suffer from these three basic factors- low self-esteem, a feeling of helplessness, and extreme dissatisfaction with the way they look.

Present-day society may be to blame for more than a few cases of eating disorders. This fashion and image obsessed culture bears no resemblance to reality. We are persistently brainwashed by the visual media. Daily we are bombarded by enhanced images of what are touted as ‘perfect women’. These women are too often alarmingly underweight, even to the point of emaciation. ‘Thin’ is perceived as the only possible acceptable look. Grown women, starved, often to the point of resembling pre-pubescent girls, and then cosmetically enhanced, sporting breast implants, butt implants, etc., these women are presented as the symbols of ‘perfection’ to the masses. So ingrained in our society has this image become, it now negatively affects every aspect of our lives, even permeating our workplaces. No matter how unrealistic it is to believe the average female can, or for that matter, would want to abuse her body in the manner mentioned above, society seems to have come to the point of no return, on this issue.
Thin Equals ‘Looking Young’
For mature women, society’s knife of influence is double-edged. Not only are we being told women must have a certain perfect body type, we are also being told that being overly thin equals looking young. ‘Lose weight, look younger!’ we see ads for diet aids promoted thus, everywhere. In such an atmosphere, even emotionally well balanced, intelligent women may be won over to the dark side!

The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to cover the appearance of the face and condition of the skin, like pore control and covering blackheads, is common among many cultures. Xeroderma, the medical name for dry skin, occurs most commonly on the lower legs, arms, the sides of the abdomen and thighs and is a very common condition.
Our skin also receives less blood flow and lower gland activity than the other organs in our body. The average square inch of skin holds 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, 60,000 melanocytes, and more than a thousand nerve endings. Skin contains hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, apocrine glands and blood vessels.
When the oil glands do not supply enough lubrication to the skin, the skin becomes dehydrated. The symptoms most associated with dry skin are: scaling, which is the visible peeling of the outer skin layer, itching, and cracks in the skin. Dry skin can also be a sign of an underactive thyroid.
Bathing or showering too frequently, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may contribute to dry skin. Certain drugs, including diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines, can contribute to dry skin conditions; check with your pharmacist or doctor and read the drug insert - you can get one from your pharmacist. When the skin loses moisture it may crack and peel, or become irritated and inflamed.
I can’t stress enough the importance of drinking plenty of pure, filtered water - a minimum of a quart a day. Eating fruits that are red or orange in color will help improve you skin health and help to prevent acne. Concentrating on a diet, of mostly fruits and vegetables (preferably uncooked), and no junk food, should give you an observable improvement in your skin within 30 days.
Drink plenty of pure, filtered water or spring water every day; at least a quart or more. Use as little soap as possible, if you have to use any, limiting its use to the armpits and genital area. Apply cool compresses to any itchy areas.
After a soothing bath or shower at night just before bedtime, apply a thin layer of coconut oil over your entire body; it’ll even last on your skin through your shower in the morning. To see what coconut oil can do for your skin fast, apply coconut oil several times a day and at bedtime. I buy coconut oil by the gallon; it’s cheaper for a whole gallon of coconut oil than a small jar of department store, name-brand moisturizer.
If you have acne, eczema or any type of dermatitis coconut oil will treat and quickly heal these skin conditions too. When you buy coconut oil, make sure you get the kind that hasn’t been refined, processed and deodorized.
The skin must be regularly cleaned or it’ll become cracked or inflamed. The skin is subject to constant attack from without; it can be affected by many conditions, diseases and ailments.
Make sure to call your skin doctor or dermatologist when you have any open cuts or sores from scratching that won’t heal. If nothing seems to work it might be more than dry skin, so you should see your doctor. And did I mention to drink lots and lots of water every day?

How to Choose the Right Weightlifting Routine
Resistance training exercise, or weightlifting, is crucial to attaining your goals. Research has shown that a combination of weight training and cardio sheds more pounds and boosts the metabolism higher than cardio alone. This is primarily because you burn several more calories per day for each droplet of fat that you replace with a fiber of lean muscle. In addition to the weight loss benefits, resistance training provides you with higher bone density, a more coordinated and well-functioning collection of muscles and joints, and better agility and balance. Furthermore, athletes can use weighlifting to improve force potential, decrease injury potential, and cross-train with sport specificity.
Unfortunately, the number of weight training “routines” that exist in magazines and on gym walls can be intimidating and confusing, and what works best for your lean next door neighbor or marathon-running friend may not be your body’s cup of tea. So how do you choose what’s best for your personal goals? I’m going to describe four basic and popular methods of lifting, and then help you decide which one to choose, depending on your individual needs.
1. Body Split Training
This style of training involves splitting the body into several “groups” of muscles, and working those muscles on certain days of the week - for example, a 5 day split would look like this:
Monday: Chest/Back/Abs
Tuesday: Shoulders/Biceps/Triceps
Wednesday: Quads/Calves
Thursday: Shoulders/Abs
Friday: Hamstrings/Low Back
This style of training is very popular among the bodybuilding crowd, because it allows an individual to focus on a specific muscle group and work that muscle to complete exhaustion. With proper rest, this results in very large and defined muscles. The sets can be as a high as 10 sets per exercise, and the reps fall anywhere in the range of 8-20. Rest periods can be as short as 10 seconds and as long as 5 minutes. Strategies include back-to-back sets, pyramiding up or down in reps and/or weight, pre-fatiguing, bouncing, super-slows, negatives, and a host of other tricks from the realm of bodybuilding. If you simply want to get “big and cut”, this is a good approach. The problem with this style of lifting is that it only works well if you can sufficiently exhaust the muscle groups, so you need to plan on spending at least an hour and a half, and up to three hours every day weightlifting in the gym. Many of the lifts are single joint lifts, meaning that the focus is not on calorie-burning, strength, or athleticism - but simply muscle isolation and growth. Many of us don’t have that kind of time: the people who get the most benefit out of a body split routine must have a high amount of dedication and devotion to their exercise program, and have a single desire: build muscle.
2. Traditional Weightlifting
When most of us think of “resistance training”, we think of a traditional weightlifting program. This typically involves 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps of a specific exercise, with a 45-60 second rest after each set. Once on exercise is completed, you move on to the next. Usually, a routine is made up of 8-10 exercises that work the entire body. Usually, this kind of routine is performed 3-4 days of the week. This is a good, straigh-forward way to build strength, bone density, and add lean muscle. Compared to some other types of lifting, traditional weightlifting does not burn a high amount of calories or elicit a high cardiovascular response, since you spend a significant amount of time sitting down and “resting” between exercises. If your goal is maximizing weight loss and/or toning and cutting, there are better programs out there for you. The same can be said for athleticism. If your goal is simply to maintain fitness and keep your body strong, this would be a good choice.
3. Circuit Style Training
Circuit style training involves choosing a series of exercises - typically multi-joint movements that work a large amount of muscles and joints at the same time - and performing these series of exercises, one after another, with minimal rest between exercises. The heart rate and metabolism get screaming high during a circuit training workout, and the density, or volume, of exercises performed can be very high with this approach. When you are trying to get the most “bang for your buck” out of your resistance training routine, a circuit style training program can be very effective. Reps are typically in the range of 10-20, and many of the exercises include a cardio component, such as a 250 meter row, a 2 minute treadmill sprint, or 25 medicine ball throws against the gym wall. As mentioned, the weightlifting exercises are primarily multi-joint, like a “squat to press”, “lunge to curl” or “deadlift to overhead extension”. Most of the clients that I train who desire weight loss and toning will have some resemblance of a circuit training routine in their program. Often, a 20-30 minute core routine performed every day of the week will literally melt away fat. The downside to circuit style training is that since the rest periods are so short, you typically can’t lift very heavy weights, and strength gains can be minimal when compared to body split training or traditional weightlifting.
4. Periodization
Periodization simply means that a training year is divided into workout cycles or “periods”. Each cycle of the training year involves a different type of weightlifting approach. For example, a training year might be divided into 1) the off-season; 2) muscular endurance building; 3) muscular strength and/or mass building; 4) power and explosive strength development and 5) strength maintenance or competition season. Obviously, this style of training has the most benefit for an athlete who is preparing for a competition. Periodization allows an athlete to “peak”, or have maximum physiological preparation, prior to their event. An example of a periodization weightlifting scheme for, say, an Ironman triathlete training for a June race, might involve the following, with three full body workouts per week:
July-September: off-season, cross-training
October-December: muscular endurance building, 3 sets of 15 reps, 8-10 exercises, 30-45 seconds rest
January-March: muscular strength building, 4 sets of 12 reps, 6-8 exercises, 60-90 seconds rest
April-May: power and speed training, 5 sets of 4 reps, 3-4 exercises, 2-3 minutes rest
June: strength maintenaince, 2 sets of 10 reps, 4-6 exercises, 1-2 minutes rest
This scheme might look different for a basketball or football player, but the underlying concepts are the same: take the body through several different training periods to allow for peak performance when it really matters. No serious athlete should choose any weightlifting routine that doesn’t include periodization.
Obviously, there are many choices and limitless combinations of workout routines.
